Goodwood to celebrate the life and career of Sir Stirling Moss at its 2021 events

  • ‘Mr Goodwood’ will be remembered at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard, and the Goodwood Revival
  • The incredible Mercedes-Benz 300SLR ‘722’, in which Moss and co-driver Denis Jenkinson won the 1955 Mille Miglia, will be on display at both events.
  • The Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy will return as a permanent fixture at the Goodwood Revival.
  • The Revival will also host one of the largest collections of Sir Stirling’s cars ever gathered in one place for a daily track parade.

The legendary Sir Stirling Moss, who passed away at Easter 2020, will be commemorated at Goodwood’s headline motorsport events in 2021.

It was at the Goodwood Motor Circuit that Moss took part in, and won, his very first motor race, on 18 September, 1948, a day after his 19th birthday. In the years that followed, Moss contested 56 races at Goodwood, winning 21 of them and finishing on the podium a further 13 times. Goodwood was the scene of four of Moss’ seven Tourist Trophy victories; two for Ferrari and two for Aston Martin, including clinching the British marque’s world championship title in 1959. Tragically, it was also the scene of his career-ending accident on 23 April, 1962.

One of the founding patrons of the Festival of Speed, and a regular competitor at the Revival, it’s little wonder that Moss became a favourite of the fans, who christened him ‘Mr Goodwood’. Given his racing record – winning in almost everything he drove – it is fitting that Moss should be remembered at the 2021 Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard, the theme for which is ‘The Maestros – Motorsport’s Great All-Rounders’.

This weekend marks the anniversary of the 1955 Mille Miglia, which Moss won with the invaluable help of co-driver Denis ‘Jenks’ Jenkinson. The daring duo completed the epic 1000-mile race in 10 hours, 7 minutes and 48 seconds, at an average speed of 99mph – a record which will stand in perpetuity. Honouring this achievement at the Festival of Speed, Mercedes-Benz will be displaying the fearsome 300SLR ‘722’ in which the pair competed, and which is rarely seen outside the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart. Mercedes-Benz will also be bringing a W196 Formula 1 car of the type Moss used to win his first Grand Prix, at Aintree in 1955.

The Goodwood Revival in September will host perhaps the largest ever gathering of Moss’ competition cars, celebrating his life and career in a way that sadly wasn’t possible in 2020. Returning for the parade will be ‘722’ in what will be one of its last public outings for many years. Assembling on the track with it will be the Lotus 18 in which Moss defeated the mighty ‘Sharknose’ Ferraris at both Monaco and the Nürburgring in 1961. Returning to Goodwood will also be the Rob Walker Racing Ferrari 250 GT SWB which Moss drove to his last Goodwood win, at the Tourist Trophy in 1961.

Many of the Moss parade cars will also be racing in earnest again during the Revival, including the Aston Martin DB3S in which he finished second at Le Mans (in the Freddie March Memorial Trophy), and the Nürburgring 1000km-winning DBR1 (Sussex Trophy). Also invited to compete in those two races respectively will be his Reims-winning Jaguar C-type and Cooper T49, while a real rarity, the Ferguson P99 four-wheel-drive Grand Prix car which Moss piloted to victory in the International Gold Cup in 1961, will join the grid for the Richmond Trophy.

The Revival will also be the setting for the second running of the Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy. Formerly the Kinrara Trophy, this race was renamed for Goodwood SpeedWeek presented by Mastercard in 2020 and will now become a permanent fixture on the Goodwood calendar. Contested by Jaguar E-types, Ferrari 250s, Aston Martin DB4 GTs and AC Cobras, this has been described as ‘the most beautiful race in the world’, taking place as the sun falls on the Friday night of the Revival weekend.

Finally, the 78th Members’ Meeting in October will see the third running of the Moss Trophy for GT cars of a type which raced up to 1962 – a fitting way to keep the Moss name alive at Goodwood’s most exclusive race meeting.

The Duke of Richmond said: “Stirling and his wife Susie were such an important part of the Goodwood family for so many years. All of us here felt his loss especially keenly as we weren’t able to commemorate his incredible life as we would have wanted last year. We hope that fans at our events around the world will join us in celebrating his racing career and bidding farewell to ‘Mr Goodwood’ in 2021. Stirling’s supreme skill and love for his sport will continue to be remembered at Goodwood for many years to come.”

ŠKODA presents the new Fabia on 4 May

  • Online world premiere of the fourth model generation begins at 18.00pm
  • ŠKODA fans around the world can watch the unveiling on the ŠKODA Storyboard
  • The DOX Centre for Contemporary Art in Prague serves as the virtual backdrop

It’s curtain-up for the new ŠKODA Fabia.

On Tuesday 4 May at 18:00pm UK time, ŠKODA AUTO will unveil the fourth generation of its successful small car. The DOX Centre for Contemporary Art in Prague will serve as a spectacular backdrop for the entirely digital world premiere. ŠKODA fans worldwide can move freely through a virtual pavilion and discover fascinating details about the ŠKODA Fabia’s success story. From now until the start of the stream on Tuesday evening, we’ll gradually reveal new areas of the pavilion at https://fabia-skoda-virtual-event.web.app/start. The world premiere will also be broadcast on the ŠKODA Storyboard and the car manufacturer’s social media channels (Youtube and Facebook).

ŠKODA will present the fourth generation of the Fabia, based for the first time on the Volkswagen Group’s Modular Transverse Toolkit MQB-A0, 22 years after its debut. It boasts a convincing price-performance ratio, outstanding safety and a high level of comfort and build quality. With its even more dynamic and emotive design, the ŠKODA Fabia has all the prerequisites to continue the model series’ success story. The digital world premiere takes place on 4 May at 18:00 UK time. The unveiling will be streamed from the virtual pavilion and can be watched anywhere in the world at https://fabia-skoda-virtual-event.web.app/start. The DOX Centre for Contemporary Art in Prague, which has been elaborately virtualised for this event, will serve as the spectacular backdrop.

Virtual tour similar to an exhibition
The digital presentation format allows viewers to tour the show as if they were in a real exhibition; they can move freely around the virtual pavilion and view the exhibits. During their tour, guests can meet ŠKODA AUTO Board Members including Chairman of the Board Thomas Schäfer and Martin Jahn, Board Member for Sales and Marketing, as well as experts from the ŠKODA Design team led by Oliver Stefani. To make these encounters as realistic as possible, the ŠKODA representatives have each created an avatar.

Presentation areas in the inner courtyard and on the roof terrace
The tour leads users to the various presentation areas in the DOX. In the inner courtyard, numerous LED walls are installed for the action programme and the roof terrace becomes the ‘NEXT LEVEL’ terrace – reflecting the Czech car manufacturer’s current programme for the future. These two areas will be where the new ŠKODA Fabia is unveiled following Thomas Schäfer’s welcoming speech. After the show, 360-degree views of vehicles will be accessible in the virtual pavilion. Later, a recording of the presentation and additional videos will be available in the airship above the ‘NEXT LEVEL’ terrace. In addition, a download link to the Press Kit will be released on the ŠKODA Storyboard.

Three-dimensional model of the DOX as a virtual pavilion
A three-dimensional model of the DOX was created for the virtual pavilion to stage the world premiere of the new ŠKODA Fabia. This is to give visitors the impression of being at a live event. The Centre for Contemporary Art is located in the Prague district of Holešovice and is a former factory that has been architecturally transformed into an impressive and ultra-modern space. The DOX premises creatively reinterpret the core characteristics of the ŠKODA Fabia: user-friendliness, suitability for everyday use, Simply Clever ideas and emotive design. The premiere is rounded off by a tape art concept designed exclusively for the new Fabia. Colourful adhesive strips are used to create artistic backgrounds and illustrate the walkthrough of the location. The tape artists were inspired not only by ŠKODA’s design language with crystalline elements but also by the driving experience in the Fabia and Simply Clever ideas as well as the extraordinary architecture of the DOX.

New colours for V-Strom 1050 and V-Strom 1050XT revealed

New colours for V-Strom 1050 and V-Strom 1050XT revealed

Suzuki has shown the colour options available on its 2021 V-Strom 1050 and V-Strom 1050XT, with bikes arriving in dealerships now.

Launched last year, the range-topping V-Strom 1050XT – which comes complete with three selectable engine maps, traction control with three modes, lean angle-sensitive ABS with two modes, linked brakes with slope and load-dependent control and hill hold, plus cruise control – remains available in the popular orange and white, DR750-inspired livery, but for 2021 it is joined by a classy, steely grey with blue decals and blue and grey seat, completed by blue spoked wheels.

An updated yellow option also features, unashamedly influenced by the firm’s RM-Z motocross range, with a black tank and gold rims. Gold rims also feature on an otherwise all black version, bar subtle grey and gold decals.

The V-Strom 1050 – which uses the same 107PS V-twin engine and many of the same electronics features as the XT but swaps the spokes for cast aluminium wheels and loses the standard fit engine bars and hand guards to come in at £9,999 – is available in a bold red and black livery and a more subtle all black option.

The new-for-2021 colours on the V-Strom 1050XT also apply to the Tour edition, which adds black three piece aluminium luggage as standard with 112 litres of storage space. With an RRP of £12,799 it equates to a saving of £370 over the purchase of the individual items.

Bentley Motors and Bentley Home are proud to present their latest collaboration: The 2021 Collection.

Four bold new furniture designs are revealed today each featuring a carefully chosen combination of unique materials and finishes that blend innovation, technology and fine craft. The Aldford Table, the Ramsey Sofa and Loveseat and the Styal Desk, elegantly sport a unique lacquered finish and an exciting new fabric produced from marble powder among a choice of finishes.

Defined by precious and cutting-edge materials, and the desire to push craftsmanship to new levels, the 2021 Bentley Home Collection represents a new vision for the brand, aligned to the ambitions of Bentley Motors, to be the most sustainable luxury automotive brand in the world. Strong, distinctive lines and timeless shapes characterise the new furniture designs by Carlo Colombo in close collaboration with Bentley Design, and introduce Bentley Home’s new Degradé lacquering and new MARM MORE® marble powder fabric.

Degradé lacquering is key to the overall aesthetic of the 2021 Bentley Home Collection, and brings a sense of quintessential luxury that is both customisable and instantly recognisable. Degradé involves an incredibly intricate and complex process to achieve the high standards required by Bentley Home’s customers. Before the Degradé essence can be created, a coat of varnish is hand-applied to protect the wood. A master craftsman must then use an airbrush to apply the colour by hand, with just the right dose of lacquer, gradually drawing away from the wood to accentuate the colour gradient and faithfully replicate every detail of the natural shading. After this long process, a round of polishing is required to give the product body, depth and solidity. Four coats of varnish are then applied before a final round of polishing.

The elegant finish is brought to life in a variety of options: Deep Ocean, Midnight Walnut, Black Kenya, Dark Shadow, Rust Degradé, Silver Degradé and Bronze Degradé. Each of these options is characterised by subtle nuances which range from black, to distinctive metallic colours that make each hand-painted product unique and unrepeatable. Each product within the new collection features the Degradé essence, and this technique can also be applied to past Bentley Home designs too.

MARM MORE® is an innovative, ethical new fabric making its debut in the furniture world, developed and patented for Bentley Home. The new fabric utilises the genuine dust that is a bi-product of marble production. Sourced and produced in Italy from start to finish, master craftsmen are required to complete every step on the journey from powder to furniture wrap. Marble is known to be the ultimate material for sculpture and architecture, and is now stylishly and innovatively reinterpreted for fabric. Harnessing the natural power of marble, it restores value to its unique dust, transforming it into a textile that offers unmatched technical performance and aesthetic qualities. The precious marble powder fabric gracefully dresses the 2021 Bentley Home Collection, accentuating the elegant shapes of the furniture designs.

Developing the new fabric was a complex and lengthy process. Production of the fabric requires the powder from high quality marble to be mixed with a special composite to obtain a liquid microfilm. The microfilm recipe is then coupled with the selected cotton base textile to produce this unique fabric finish. This innovation in textile development uses renewable resources only and results in significant waste reduction.

MARM MORE® is available in a choice of two different colours: light grey and natural green, each with a matte finish. This innovative covering can be chosen for every upholstered product within the new collection, and also applied to previous designs from Bentley Home.

Styal
The new Styal Desk is the masterpiece of the new 2021 Bentley Home collection. During these times where the office has forcibly entered our homes, Bentley Home elevates the concept of office space, giving shape to an iconic product, luxurious and refined throughout every detail.

A succession of graceful curves run the length of the 3 metre wooden frame, covered in a choice of leather or veneer, with the sideboard elegantly positioned for balanced proportion. The desktop is punctuated with a gun metal grey insert: a visual “incision” that accentuates its sculptural profile, governing its lines and leading the curves at either end. The desk is broken down into four elements, subdivided by a metal profile, which can be covered in either leather or veneer. Slim and light, extreme from all perspectives, Styal dramatically reimagines the experience of working from home.

The structure and top can be customised in a choice of: Warm Grey Fiddleback Sycamore, Smoked Liquidambar or Burr Walnut root, with a glossy, brushed finishing. Alternatively, leather-covered top can be chosen. Finished in wood with metallic finishing in gun metal grey. Degradé lacquering effect is also brought in to finish the wood options.

Aldford
Design and art come together in the clean, sleek lines of the new Aldford Table, with both rectangular and circular versions available to choose from. Legs taper up from the floor and meet under the top in a single form, accentuating the sense of lightness and suspension. The design is enhanced by the three layers that make up the tabletop: the underside is lacquered in glossy black, and a metal profile runs around the perimeter.

Aldford presented a completely new constructional challenge for the designers at the Luxury Living Group and the craftspeople at Bentley Home. The double curve of the base and the sloping edge of the top are achieved using the very latest milling techniques.

Customers can choose from three finishes for the legs: Burr Walnut, Smoked Liquid Ambar, or leather-covered. The top is available in Calacatta or Valentine Grey marble, or glossy Burr Walnut, Smoked Liquid Amber or Warm Grey Fiddleback Sycamore. Degradé lacquering is applied to all wood finishes.

Ramsey
The Ramsey range appears to defy gravity: its seat is suspended off the floor, and its tapered shell flows into armrests that reach upwards like outstretched wings. The lines are delicate, split only by a transparent panel between the seat and backrest. A gun metal grey insert frames the profile, reaching down below the seat, emphasising the apparent defiance of gravity.

With graceful proportions, the Ramsey Loveseat is the first loveseat conceived by Bentley Home. It is therefore fitting that this design proposes a new dimension of luxury through its evolving spatial requirements, that will suit the most contemporary of homes, both alongside or independently from the Ramsey Sofa.

Both the sofa and loveseat are available in a choice of coverings: Warm Grey Fiddleback Sycamore, Smoked Liquidambar, Burr Walnut root, or alternatively, covered in leather or the marble powder fabric. Degradé lacquering is also applied to the wood finishes.

Ducati ends the first quarter of 2021 with significant growth and an excellent order portfolio

Ducati ends the first quarter of 2021 with significant growth and an excellent order portfolio

Ducati concludes the first quarter of 2021 positively, continuing the upward trend that began in the second half of 2020.

The Italian motorcycle manufacturer delivered 12,803 bikes from January to March, recording an increase in sales of +33% compared to the same period in 2020. Sales are also up 2% compared to the first quarter of 2019.

Claudio Domenicali, Ducati CEO: “The performance in the first months of 2021 is certainly very positive. Motorcycles delivered to customers in the first quarter of the year grew not only compared to 2020, already impacted by Covid, but also compared to 2019. Even more remarkable is the size of the order portfolio (motorcycles to be delivered) at the end of the quarter, which is the best-ever, with an extraordinary 93% growth compared to 2020 and +135% compared to 2019. Enthusiasts are appreciating the 2021 range and the family of Ducatisti is expanding. The global market situation is positive in the world of two wheels, while the supply and transport sectors are much more complex, with delivery delays and a shortage of various raw materials. This makes it difficult to satisfy all the demand from our passionate customers, but at Ducati we are strongly motivated to do everything we can to reduce the inconvenience caused by this situation. I want to thank all the women and men who, in Borgo Panigale and in our subsidiaries around the world, are working with great commitment in this period of high seasonality”.

In the first quarter of 2021, Italy confirmed its position as the main market for Ducati with 2,354 motorcycles delivered, followed by the USA with 1,723 and Germany with 1,275 units. The Ducati Scrambler 800 range is the best performing in the quarter, while the Multistrada V4 is the model most delivered to customers, followed by the Streetfighter V4.
