Historic DBR1 optional specification offered for visceral open cockpit sports car
Meticulously crafted details pay homage to 1959 Le Mans winning original
88 examples of the Aston Martin V12 Speedster to be built
Aston Martin is revealing today more details of its forthcoming V12 Speedster – the open cockpit celebration of the British luxury sports car brand’s proud past and exciting future.
Just 88 examples of the Aston Martin V12 Speedster are available to buyers worldwide and today the brand is unveiling details of a custom specification that is certain to underscore the cars’ instant collector’s item status.
The new car aligns gracefully with a heritage that features not only the exceptional DBR1, but also the breathtaking CC100 which was unveiled in 2013 as a stunning celebration of Aston Martin’s century of sports car excellence – reflecting the sporting heritage and exceptional design capability woven throughout well over 100 years of Aston Martin history.
The DBR1 is, to date, the most successful racing machine constructed by Aston Martin, having triumphed in the 1959 staging of both the 24 hours of Le Mans and the 1,000 km of Nürburgring, also winning the latter in 1957 and 1958.
After its debut in 1956 the DBR1 recorded a string of famous victories, including at the Spa Sportscar Race (1957, Tony Brooks); the Goodwood Tourist Trophy (1958, Sir Stirling Moss, Tony Brookes; 1959, Sir Stirling Moss, Carrol Shelby, Jack Fairman); and the 1000 Km at the Nurburgring (1959, Sir Stirling Moss and Jack Fairman) in the same year as that famous Le Mans triumph which culminated in Aston Martin taking the World Sportscar Championship.
Although a car made for competitive racing, the DBR1 was also a precursor for some of the marque’s most well-known heritage ‘DB’ road cars. It was styled in-house by a highly talented designer, Frank Feeley, and, working alongside Chief Racing Designer Ted Cutting, represents what is unquestionably his ‘finest hour’ – indeed the shape of the DBR1 remains one of the most beautiful and graceful of all time.
At the car’s heart from 1958 onwards lay a 2,992 cc straight six engine mated to a David Brown five-speed gearbox. It was capable of powering this c. 800 kg sports car to an estimated top speed in excess of 150 mph.
Produced as a pure racing model – not directly derived from a road car – just five examples of DBR1 were built: four used to such commanding effect by the Aston Martin Works’ team, and a single car for private use.
With such a rich and important history it’s no surprise, then, that the brand should choose to create a dedicated optional DBR1 specification for it’s new V12 Speedster.
Featuring cleverly integrated custom elements reminiscent of the Le Mans winning race car, the Aston Martin V12 Speedster DBR1 specification offers highlights such as the iconic Aston Martin Racing Green paint finish, Clubsport White pinstripe and roundels, a Satin Silver anodised grille with Clubsport lipstick graphic, Conker saddle leather and Viridian Green technical textile/Caithness leather. All these features hint at the period attributes that made DBR1 the undisputed icon it remains today.
Unique Aston Martin Racing Green driver and passenger helmets sit under transparent ‘windows’, while solid silver ‘wings’ badges glint beneath transparent enamel. The finely judged application of gloss carbon fibre, Caithness Green leather and satin silver brushed aluminium switchgear in the V12 Speedster’s open cabin underline the tasteful homage to a true motoring great.
Satin black diamond turned 21-inch centre lock wheels are a feature of this specialist specification, which each Aston Martin V12 Speedster spending more than 50 hours in the painting process alone at the brand’s advanced paint facility.
Outlining the rationale behind this V12 Speedster tribute specification, Aston Martin Chief Creative Officer, Marek Reichman said: “Emotion and exclusivity are at the heart of this car. A rare and exceptional Aston Martin, It has been engineered to offer a visceral driving experience that belies its elegant, artistic shape.
“Creating a bespoke specification that nods to the glory of the DBR1 has been a huge privilege for my team and I, and I very much look forward to seeing these cars being driven with the same enthusiasm that we have applied to their design.”
At the new car’s heart lies a high-performance variant of Aston Martin’s now iconic, 5.2-litre V12 Twin-Turbo engine, capable of generating an output of around 700 PS and 753 Nm. Offering a compelling breadth of performance, superb response and thrilling V12 soundtrack, the engine is mated to a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission mounted towards the rear of the car.
This translates into a 0-62 mph time in the order of 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 198 mph – no mean feat in a car devoid of roof or windscreen.
Orders are now being taken for the DBR1 custom V12 Speedsters, each being hand built at the company’s Gaydon headquarters, with deliveries expected to begin in mid 2021.
Ask any child of the 1980s what names like the Hornet, Lunchbox, Sand Scorcher & Avante meant to them, and they will likely reminisce about the joys of building and driving the 1/10th scale Radio Controlled (R/C) cars of their childhood.
It is no secret that some of today’s most notable car designers started their engineering journey with the world’s best-known R/C car brand – Tamiya.
The original Tamiya Wild One (58050) was released in 1985 and became one of the brand’s most iconic models. Such was the popularity of the model it was even re-released in 2012 (58525) to further acclaim.
Now, The Little Car Company are delighted to announce that the Wild One will make its return a decade later – only this time, with a difference.
The Little Car Company are developing the Wild One MAX for release in 2022 under licence from Tamiya. Rather than being 1/10th scale, the Wild One MAX will be an impressive 8/10th scale, and you will not need an R/C controller, because it is big enough to drive yourself!
Developed in partnership with the company behind the Bugatti Baby II and Aston Martin DB5 Junior – The Little Car Company – the Wild One MAX will be a rear-wheel drive, off road electric buggy. At approximately 3.5m long (137.8”),1.8m (70.8”) wide and weighing around 250kg (551lbs), the Wild One MAX will take up a bit more space than the R/C kits of the past. But just like the original, you get the opportunity to assemble these models at home.
Specifications The Wild One MAX will have a spaceframe chassis with four-wheel coil-over suspension and rear wheel drive. It gets the power to the ground through 15” off-road tyres on lightweight wheels. The buggy’s braking system includes hydraulic Brembo disc brakes on each corner, backed up by regenerative braking to maximise range.
When taking to the driving seat, customers will find an adjustable composite seat with a three-point seatbelt, digital gauges and a racing steering wheel. This allows drivers between 160cm (5’ 3”) and 195cm (6’ 5”) to get comfortable. There are even multiple driving modes including Novice, Eco & Race, which offer different top speeds, throttle mappings and power outputs according to driver skill level.
Performance The base Wild One Max comes with a top speed of 48 km/h / 30 mph and a peak power output of 4kW (5.5 bhp). It has a single PowerPack onboard with a capacity of 2kWh and a range of up to 40km (25 miles), depending on terrain and driving style.
However, if you would like to go faster or further, several of the modular PowerPacks can be added to increase the performance and range.
Hop Ups & Upgrades As any big kid Tamiya fan knows, half the fun following the build of your Tamiya R/C car was delving into Tamiya’s upgrade catalogue to choose your Hop-Ups. The Wild One MAX will be no exception.
30 mph not fast enough? There is a Hop-Up for that. Yearning for a four-point racing harness? The Little Car Company can help. High performance brakes and suspension? They’ve got that covered too.
One more thing…. On top of the individual Hop-Ups for the Wild One MAX, there will also be complete ‘Packs’, which can be added to your buggy. For example, a Tarmac Pack will provide owners with road-biased tyres and mudguards.
And taking it one stage further, for those who wish to roam both off and, on the roads, there will be three Road Legal Packs so that the adventure can continue way beyond the workshop. These packs add the components required to build the vehicle to be compliant with L6e or L7e Quadricycle legislation in Europe, or Neighbourhood Electric Vehicle legislation in the USA. Parts will include brake lights, turn signals, reflectors and rear-view mirrors so you have everything to make your vehicle fully road legal.
Building for the next generation While it is still early days in the development process, we will be trying to bring back many of the classic elements of the Tamiya build, which fans enjoyed most. For example, do you remember those sticker sheets you used to carefully apply at the end? They’re back, but they’re now as tall as you are!
We really do want to hear from the fans on what they would like to see in the development of the Wild One MAX, so please sign up at WildOneMax.com and become part of the community and tell us what you would like to see on the new car.
“We are massively flattered and thrilled by the launch of the Wild One Max by The Little Car Company under official licence from Tamiya. Tamiya assembly R/C kits, especially our unique buggy range, have captured the imaginations of generations for over 40 years. The prospect of a nearly full-size Tamiya buggy, which can be built and driven, is truly exciting and will be the ultimate vehicle for any Tamiya fan.” Pete Binger, CEO, The Hobby Company – Tamiya UK Distributor
“As a child of the 80s, developing an almost full-size Tamiya model, which you can actually drive, is a dream come true. We are honoured to be working with the Tamiya team on the project to bring one of their most iconic models to life for a new generation. Because it is still early days in the project, we have the opportunity to include the feedback and feature suggestions from the legions of Tamiya fans out there. We encourage anyone with imaginative ideas and feedback around the engineering of the project to sign up to the newsletter at WildOneMax.com. We can’t wait to get these on, and off, the road in 2022!” Ben Hedley, CEO, The Little Car Company
Reserving a build slot The Tamiya Wild One MAX is expected to cost from £6,000 / €7000 / $8,250 plus local taxes and is planned for global release in 2022. Customers can reserve a build slot from today at WildOneMax.com with a £100 fully refundable deposit. Build slots are allocated on a “first come, first served” basis.
If you would like to hear more about the project and to sign up for the latest news, please visit: WildOneMax.com
Please note final specifications and pricing are to be confirmed before production commences.
About Tamiya Founded in Shizuoka Japan in 1946, Tamiya started life as a sawmill and timberyard which also made wooden models. By 1959 it made the decision to start manufacturing plastic kits; a move which would see the company dominate the sector for the next five decades producing the world’s leading and award-winning aircraft, military, ship, car and motorcycle kits. Over the years ‘Tamiya Standard’ has become an industry byword for quality to which others aspire.
In 1976, Tamiya launched its first radio-controlled assembly kit; a Porsche 934 using the body mould from one of its famed 1/12 scale plastic kit. This first release and those which were to follow sparked the R/C revolution. The highly engineered and detailed kits were seen as educational as well as great fun. Race series all over the world were established and a strong following ensued. Off road buggies with evocative names like Sand Scorcher, Rough Rider, Hornet and Wild One became central to the range.
Tamiya R/C and plastic kits as well as its extensive range of paints and accessories continue to be massively popular, a lasting testament to the quality, variety and integrity of its products.
Tamiya’s HQ is based in Shizuoka with an additional manufacturing base in Cebu Philippines.

Founded in 2007, Zenvo limits production of its models to five cars per year, all hand built by a skilled team at its headquarters in Præstø, Denmark, which has been recently refurbished to expand its in-house production capabilities.
Zenvo’s road-going TS1 GT and TSR-S are both fully compliant with Euro 6 regulations and are homologated for the German market. A power pack upgrade for the TSR-S is in development and set to launch this year, while an all-new series of vehicles, built solely by Zenvo, is also in progress.
