Getting kids into the classics: Classic Car Driving Experiences launch for under 17s(and parents can have a go too…)
10 to 17-year olds can drive a Vauxhall VX490, Morris Minor or Austin 7
Young Driver’s classic experiences will be launched at the British Motor Museum on 22 May by Quentin Willson
For the first time youngsters up to seven years under the legal driving age will be able to take to the wheel of three iconic British-made classic cars.
Thanks to the UK’s largest pre-17 driving school, Young Driver, youngsters aged 10 and over can take a spin in a Vauxhall VX490, Morris Minor or Austin 7 with a fully qualified driving instructor. Adults will also be welcome to sample the driving dynamics of three of Britain’s most famous cars, one of which dates back almost 90 years.
Young Driver, which more typically offers lessons to 10-17 year olds in brand new Vauxhall Corsa SE Premiums at 70 venues across the UK, prepared to launch the classic car experience in Autumn 2020 – just as lockdown hit and events had to be put on hold.
Having spent the last few months fine-tuning the engines, the classic cars will be available to drive at the British Motor Museum in Gaydon, Warwickshire, from 22nd May and will be officially launched by motoring expert and TV presenter Quentin Willson. Events will then take place regularly throughout the year. The driving experiences last 15-minutes and those booking a lesson also get discounted entry into the museum.
The 1963 VX490 HB is one of only 10 currently registered with the DVLA. Having driven just 21,000 miles, it’s a remarkably well-preserved example of Vauxhall’s top sporting saloon of the 60s complete with wood dash, sports gearbox and six ancillary gauges.
The 1934 Austin 7 Ulster Replica is cute, lively and amazingly fun to drive with cycle wings, fish tail exhaust, fold down windscreen and boat tail alloy body. Just like the real thing, it’s deceptively brisk and guaranteed to make any driver – young or old – beam with delight!
The 1959 Morris Minor convertible is a classic British icon that radiates fun, charm and 50s period loveliness. Finished in Old English White with red trim and hood it’s easy to drive with light controls and a sweet gearbox.
Sue Waterfield, head of marketing at Young Driver, said: “Since 1903 drivers have needed to be 17 to get behind the wheel – so our pupils will be the youngest to take control of these three classics! Lockdown has meant the cars have had to be rested for a few months, but we’re delighted to now be able to properly launch our classic experience. We’ve given more than 900,000 lessons in new cars over the last 12 years, but the Vauxhall VX490, Morris Minor and Austin 7 will give a completely different experience. We’re happy to let both youngsters and grown ups have a go behind the wheel and take a step (or drive) back in time! The nostalgia factor will be huge for anyone over a certain age, but these cars appeal to everyone, they’re absolutely stunning and great fun to drive.”
Jeff Coope, Managing Director at the British Motor Museum, said: “The Museum is delighted that Young Driver have chosen the British Motor Museum as the venue for its new classic experiences. The mission of the Museum as an Educational charity is to inform and inspire future generations and the addition of these experiences helps to bring the history we share to life. Anyone who books with Young Driver gets discounted admission to the Museum on the day of their experience and can see for themselves how the car they were driving fits into the history of British motoring. Amongst its extensive collections the Museum holds, for example, the first Morris Minor ever produced!”
Car expert and enthusiast Quentin Willson, who is a patron of Young Driver, added: “Kids driving classics isn’t just fun, it will teach young drivers special skills. Being extra delicate with steering, clutch and brakes, listening to the rise and fall of the engine and getting used to large turning circles will make them more patient and mechanically sympathetic. I think it’s a great idea.”
Driving experiences in Young Driver’s Classic Car range will be available from 22nd May and will cost £25.
Young Driver was established in 2009 with the aim of revolutionising the learning to drive journey, helping to reduce the high accident rate for newly qualified drivers by extending the learning period. For more information or to book a lesson visit www.youngdriver.com or call 0333 577 9010.
Zenvo Automotive’s flagship, track-focused TSR-S limited edition hypercar arrives in the UK
Programme of events planned for customers and brand followers throughout the summer
1,177bhp TSR-S features a 5.8-litre twin-supercharged flat-plane V8, class-leading aerodynamics and lightweight carbon body, all produced by Zenvo in-house
Arrival coincides with the brand’s global expansion, including recent appointment of official German dealer MOHR GROUP
Zenvo Automotive’s TSR-S has landed on UK tarmac ahead of a comprehensive events programme that will allow customers and brand aficionados across the UK to experience the limited edition hypercar throughout the summer, both dynamically and in static displays.
The soon-to-be-announced event calendar will give onlookers the opportunity to witness one of the world’s fastest accelerating rear-wheel drive cars in action. The TSR-S features an in-house developed 1,177bhp 5.8-litre twin-supercharged flat-plane V8 engine, which is coupled with a motorsport-derived gearbox, to propel it from standstill to 100km/h in just 2.8 seconds. It takes less than 6.8 seconds for it to reach 200km/h, with its top speed is electronically limited to 325km/h.
With a full carbon body – honed to exceptionally high-quality standards in-house – it weighs in at 1,495kg (dry weight). All that power is transferred to the road via Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres, and is kept under control by a patented active Centripetal wing. This distinctive Zenvo innovation has the ability to change the angle of attack in two different axis. Under braking, it creates additional drag and acts as an air brake, while in cornering it distributes downforce to the inner side of the car to minimise vehicle roll. The lateral angle of attack can change by up to 20 degrees, giving the Centripetal wing a significant advantage over other market solutions.
A dual gearbox set up allows drivers to switch between a standard road gearbox configuration and a brutal mechanical direct power-shift race set-up, again all developed in-house by Zenvo’s expert team of engineers.
UK event goers will see the TSR-S crouch on the road like a lion primed to attack; this naturally powerful image having inspired the Zenvo design team. Its dramatic and sinister looks are striking, yet rooted in the Danish design tradition of form following function. Smooth curves contrast against motorsport-inspired angles that denote its phenomenal power, with customers able to tailor each model to their exacting specification.
The expertly crafted TSR-S sits at the pinnacle of the hypercar segment. Hand built at Zenvo’s headquarters in Præstø, Denmark, just five of the brand’s models are manufactured by the specialist team each year, utilising its comprehensive in-house manufacturing capabilities.
Zenvo Automotive is currently establishing a global dealer and service network for the TSR-S and its line-up of limited edition hypercars, and in April 2021 appointed the MOHR GROUP as its official dealer in Germany. It will offer the brand’s full model range at its flagship 1,600m2 showroom in Motorworld München, and will also retail the brand’s upcoming all-new series when launched.
Angela Kashina, CEO of Zenvo Automotive, said: “The reception to Zenvo Automotive in the UK has been fantastic, and we’re very excited to share the TSR-S with those who have been so supportive of the brand. There are a lot of people eager to get behind the wheel of the car, as well as see it in action, and we will be revealing our UK event calendar in the coming weeks.”
About Zenvo Automotive: Zenvo Automotive is a producer of limited edition hypercars based in Præstø, Denmark. Founded in 2007, Zenvo was started with the aim of combining the latest technologies and innovation with an analogue feel, offering the driver a true connection and astonishing performance.
The company began with the TS1 prototype, a twin-charged introduction to the brand, and has since gone on to develop the TS1 GT grand tourer, TSR track model and the flagship TSR-S. TSR-S utilises a lightweight carbon body produced in-house, a 1,177 bhp twin supercharged flat-plane V8 and class-leading aerodynamics including Zenvo’s patented Centripetal rear wing, which reacts to steering inputs to create high levels of downforce while cornering. Production of all Zenvo models is limited to just five cars per year, all manufactured in Denmark and available to collectors and enthusiasts worldwide.

Subaru UK is proud to announce the introduction of the long awaited all-new Outback, due to arrive in showrooms from 27th May with prices starting from £33,995.
Since its launch in 1995, Outback has built a history as the forerunner of a new car segment, the station wagon crossover SUV, combining the attributes of both passenger car and SUV.
Outback has grown into Subaru’s flagship model, and its popularity increased over the years, cherished by people around the world, for providing the values of an everyday companion: safety, comfort, practicality, capability and drivability. The 6th generation is our most technologically advanced, luxurious, and safest yet. Limited, Field and Touring Outback model variants, all built on the SGP, confer superior passenger protection alongside the latest driver assistance and collision avoidance technology.
Key features of all-new Subaru Outback
Overall safety top in its class
The safest Outback ever built, the new model offers all-around safety protection, from an optimal driving position, window heights, and carefully arranged pillars to provide excellent visibility in all directions to an array of world-class, advanced safety technologies.
New Outback boasts generous equipment fitted as standard across all three trim levels, including the next generation EyeSight Driver Assist technology, Subaru’s cutting-edge stereo camera prevention collision system, with nearly twice the field of vision, and includes: Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centering Function, Emergency Lane Keep Assist, Speed Sign Recognition with Intelligent Speed Limiter, Lane Departure Warning with steering wheel vibration, Lane Departure Prevention and Pre-Collision Braking System with expanded support for collision avoidance at junctions and crossroads.
A brand-new technology for Outback is the Driver Monitoring System to complement its existing safety technologies, which will alert the driver when distracted or feeling fatigued. Reverse Automatic braking is also a new safety feature fitted as standard for all-new Outback that helps drivers to avoid collisions when reversing and mitigates the damage in case of collision. Its rich safety equipment also includes Subaru Rear Vehicle Detection (SRVD), and Multi View Monitors (Front, Rear and Side) available on Touring, for a safer drive that reduces vehicle blind spots.
The SGP ensures class-leading passenger safety thanks to an increase in the amount of high-tensile steel panel materials for a lighter body and improved protection in frontal, side and rear end collisions by over 40% allowing the frame structure to absorb energy more efficiently. The body has been substantially strengthened with a new structural frame (full inner frame structure) and additional beams and sub frames, further enhancing the world’s top level collision safety performance, including the Mobile Progressive Deformable Barrier (MPDB) crash test. Giving confidence in every aspect of the driving experience, the Subaru Global Platform furthers Subaru’s commitment to building the safest cars on the road.
Driving enjoyment with superior performance
The new model preserves the distinctive combination of permanent Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (SAWD) with the BOXER engine and Lineartronic Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) transmission. It incorporates a direct-injection 2.5-litre naturally aspirated horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine, with about 90% engine parts redesigned and a higher compression ratio. The Lineartronic CVT has been enhanced with the gear ratio coverage expanded to a wider range. The hydraulic system has also been redesigned and the oil viscosity lowered, which reduces horsepower loss by 22% compared to the previous Outback model. This combination offers enhanced driving performance and increased torque control, while the standard SAWD, provides all-weather capability, paired with a standard active torque vectoring for improved handling and cornering performance.
Handling performance and ride comfort have been increased with significant improvements made to the suspension and chassis, removing vibrations from the steering system, floor, and seats. The newly refined SAWD and SGP have improved the absorption performance on uneven road surfaces for you to enjoy new levels of control, stability, and ride comfort in a quiet, hushed cabin.
By increasing rigidity of the body, front suspension and rear subframe, all-new Outback has enhanced straight-line stability and minimised body roll by 50%. More responsive handling allows the driver to better steer the car as intended and improves hazard avoidance.
Versatile space with smarter storage
Designed for active lifestyles, all-new Outback is more spacious than the previous model. The windshield has been moved forward and the front door windows moved out for a more spacious front interior, resulting in a class–leading spacious cabin. The total length has also been extended to further expand the rear interior and cargo space, to create an interior where every passenger can ride comfortably. 60/40 fold down rear seats and a wider boot opening create a cavernous flat load area for up to 522L of cargo, whilst integrated roof rails provide further secure storage overhead making it easy to just load up all the family’s gear and go. All-new Outback comes with a variety of convenient features suited for any lifestyle. It incorporates Subaru’s first hands-free power tailgate and single-touch pop-up tonneau cover which allows easy access to the boot when you have your hands full by simply waving an elbow near the badge to automatically raise the tailgate.
The boot space also includes improved hooks and net pocket so objects can be easily secured when driving. For more versatility and safety, new Outback offers secure integrated, fold our roof rails on Limited and Touring, or strengthened built-in roof rails on Field enhanced tie-down holes so straps or ropes can be easily tied directly to the roof rails.
The side sill steps at the front and rear doors have been widened for better footing and changed to a non-slip pattern, so luggage can be loaded while maintaining a stable posture.
Cutting edge technology with a more intuitive user interface
With a completely re-imagined cabin interior, all-new Outback ensures you and your family travel in first class whilst staying connected out on the road. Equipped as standard with a completely redesigned next-generation infotainment system, you can easily touch, swipe, or drag to navigate the large, intuitive 11.6-inch full HD vertical display or simply use your voice. Bring up maps, find contacts, send messages, select driving modes, and access compatible apps, news, music, podcasts and much more.
Besides its safety features, the Driver Monitoring System also delivers convenience with the facial recognition camera identifying up to 5 individuals in the driver seat and automatically adjusting settings for seat position, door mirror angles and air-conditioning preferences.
Enhanced off-road capability
The improved engine performance offers more power for acceleration as well as driving on rough terrain, so drivers can enjoy SUV performance in all driving scenarios.
The toughest Subaru SUV built to date, new Outback comes with a newly evolved X-MODE with Hill Descent Control for reliable control on steep, wet, or slippery terrain. Switch between [SNOW/DIRT] mode to confidently negotiate snow, dirt, or gravel, or [D.SNOW/MUD] mode for soft conditions where lesser vehicles get stuck.
At the press of a button, SUBARU Intelligent Drive (SI-DRIVE) lets you adjust the throttle and gear-shifting response to give you immediate power and agility on demand. Select Sport Mode for instant throttle response, ideal for enjoying winding roads, or Intelligent Mode for more fuel-efficient power delivery around town or on long journeys.
Engineered to drive on or off-road, all-new Outback also offers excellent road clearance for a wider range of activities. The high 213mm ground clearance maximises approach, departure and ramp angles, minimising the risk of the bumpers or chassis getting damaged or stuck.
It also boasts a 2,000kg braked or 750kg unbraked towing capacity to enable high performance towing and control.
A rear-view camera jet washer has been added so that the camera lens is always clear of dirt, mud, and grime to assist with parking and off-road adventures.
Redesigned from ground-up
The exterior design of Outback is more tough and rugged than ever. Dynamic silhouettes and prominent wheel arches surround the new premium 18” alloy-wheels which are available on all trim levels. Outback is very well specified with Keyless Entry and Push Button Start System, LED headlights, equipped with high beam assist and an adaptive driving beam to optimise visibility and reduce glare, and LED front fog lights standard across the range.
The new model features a redesigned interior with carefully selected materials for a more premium feel throughout the entire cabin. Enlarged windshield and long line motif extended from the centre of the instrument panel to the door panels expresses a relaxed and open atmosphere of the cabin space. New Outback offers a variety of seats options, from Nappa leather seats for a more luxurious feel in the Outback Touring, to more practical and durable water-repellent synthetic leather seats in the Outback Field with distinctive green stitching complementing green accents on the bodywork and trim, ideal for those with ore active lifestyles. Fatigue-reducing seats offer comfortable support and stability for long journeys, so you feel more refreshed when you reach your destination. Both front and rear seats enjoy heating to shoulder level with three temperature settings and a heated steering wheel takes the chill out of winter journeys.
All-new Outback is offered in three trim levels: Limited, Field and Touring and its unique character is also expressed through the two newly and specially designed exterior colours, Autumn Green Metallic and Brilliant Bronze Metallic (not available on Field model).

Hyundai Motor UK has announced the pricing and specification of IONIQ 5, the first car in the new IONIQ brand and the first Hyundai built on a new dedicated Electric-Global Modular Platform.
IONIQ 5’s design explores a new design freedom offered by a dedicated BEV platform and mirrors the design of the 45 concept first seen at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show. The 45 concept was in itself inspired by the original Hyundai Pony Coupe Concept from 1974. The IONIQ 5 highlights Hyundai’s 45-year journey to become a part of customer’s lifestyles, creating a common thread from past to present and future.
The IONIQ 5 is built upon Hyundai Motor Group’s dedicated battery electric vehicle architecture called Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), enabling it to have unique proportions on an elongated wheelbase. With E-GMP, IONIQ 5 offers innovative interior design with eco-friendly materials in many touchpoints; strong performance mated with ultra-fast charging, a Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function as well as advanced connectivity and driver assistance features that will offer the ultimate in-car experience while ensuring a high level of safety.
