Crendon Fastrack Honda set to clean up with Muc-Off

The Crendon Fastrack Honda team is partnering with Muc-Off, the global leader in bike and motorcycle care and maintenance, for 2021.

Muc-Off will be supporting the team with a full selection of products from their Clean, Protect and Lube systems, which includes the renowned pink Nano Tech Bike Cleaner; the flagship product that launched the brand back in 1994. Muc-Off will also be working with the team to develop and test new off-road products to help them drive their competitive edge while racing.

Dave’s team have a great pedigree and to have elite riders such as Tommy Searle and Jake Nicholls on the team really says it all! The team will be competing in the top-flight of British motocross championships, the ACU British Motocross Championship and the MX Nationals. Heading up the team are the two fastest motocross riders in the UK: 31-year-old Tommy Searle and 30-year-old Jake Nicholls. Both riders will be riding the all-new Honda CRF450R, and they will both be challenging for the title. New to the team and completing the line-up is 23-year-old Jay Hague who will be riding the Honda CRF250R in the MX2 class.

Both Searle and Nicholls have a wealth of experience between them, having both competed in the World Motocross Championships for over a decade. Searle finished runner up in the MX2 class and Nicholls had a career best of second overall. Both riders retired from the world racing scene within the last few years to concentrate on racing on home soil. Hague, a former youth champion, became a professional rider in 2017 and is being nurtured by triple world 500 champ Thorpe to rebuild his confidence in his ability after a tough start to his career.  

Crendon Fastrack Honda will make its British championship racing debut as a team at Culham on the May 1-2. Tommy Searle and Jay Hague will be racing this weekend, April 17-18, at Hawkstone Park in the Bridgestone Masters as a pre-season warm up.

Room for seven*

Compact on the outside, spacious on the inside
The new EQB (length/width/height: 4684/1834[1]/1667[2] millimetres) offers a generous amount of space and a maximum boot capacity of 1710 litres2 thanks to having the long wheelbase of the GLB (2829 millimetres). The inclination of the backrests in the second row can be adjusted in several stages as standard, and this row features longitudinally adjustment of 140 millimetres as an option.

Third all-electric launch in 2021
While the first EQA 250 (NEDC combined electrical consumption: 15.7 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km)[3] roll into European dealerships and the EQS, the purpose-designed, fully electric member of the new S-Class family, is being presented, the China-specific version of the new EQB will be making its debut in Shanghai. It will be produced in Beijing and comes to market in China later this year. The European version will also be launched in 2021, and in the USA the EQB will arrive in 2022. The electrical consumption of the EQB 350 4MATIC in Europe, NEDC3: combined electrical consumption: 16.2 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km, range 478 km; WLTP[4]: combined electrical consumption: 19.2 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km, range 419 km.

The compact class becomes increasingly electric
The EQB will be the first all-electric production vehicle from the Hungarian plant in Kecskemét. So far, the CLA and CLA Shooting Brake plug-in hybrid models have come off the production line there. The A-Class with plug-in hybrid drive will also be produced in Kecskemét in future – in addition to the German Mercedes-Benz plant in Rastatt, where the EQA is built.

Customers have the choice
The EQB range will include several models with front-wheel and all-wheel drive, various power ratings – some of which will exceed 200 kW – plus batteries with usable capacities starting from 66.5 kWh. A particularly long-range version is also planned.

Electro design aesthetics
The EQB interprets Mercedes-EQ’s Progressive Luxury in an edgy and characterful way. It features the typical Mercedes-EQ black panel grille with central star. A further distinctive design feature of the all-electric world of Mercedes-EQ vehicles is the continuous light strip at front and rear.

Navigation with Electric Intelligence
The standard Navigation with Electric Intelligence contributes to the effortless handling of the EQB in everyday life. It calculates the fastest route to the destination, taking into account maximum charging power and the duration of possible charging stops. In addition, the Navigation with Electric Intelligence ensures that the high-voltage battery is brought to an optimal charging temperature before a planned charging stop, as needed.

Green power as standard
By means of high-quality certificates of origin, Mercedes-Benz guarantees that energy from renewable energy sources is fed into the grid for charging current sourced via Mercedes me Charge. With Mercedes me Charge, customers can charge at over 200,000 public charging stations across Europe.

New EQB: electromobility in the family pack

All-electric compact SUV with up to seven seats celebrates premiere in China

Stuttgart/Shanghai. Whether a large nuclear family or a small extended family: as a seven-seater, the new EQB offers space for many family constellations and a wide variety of transport needs. This gives it an exceptional position not only in the compact segment, but especially among electric cars. The two seats in the third row can be used by people up to 5ft 4inches tall, and child seats can also be fitted there. The new EQB will make its debut at Auto Shanghai 2021 (21 to 28 April 2021). Following the EQA 250 (combined electrical consumption: 15.7 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km)[5] it is the second fully electric compact car from Mercedes-EQ. The powerful and efficient electric drive, clever recuperation and predictive Navigation with Electric Intelligence are just some of the features that link it to the EQA. The market launch in China is scheduled for this year. After Europe, the international version of the EQB, produced in Kecskemét, Hungary, will be launched at the end of the year, followed by the US market launch in 2022.

The electric offensive from Mercedes-Benz Cars is not only picking up speed, it is accelerating with as much kick as the Mercedes-EQ vehicles themselves: while the first EQAs roll into European dealerships and the EQS, the purpose-designed, all-electric member of the new S-Class family, is being presented, the version of the new EQB specific to China will be making its debut in Shanghai at the same time. It is also produced in China at Beijing Benz Automotive Co., Ltd (BBAC), a joint venture between Daimler and its Chinese partner BAIC Group. The design of the new all-electric compact SUV interprets the progressive luxury of Mercedes-EQ in an edgy and characterful way.

“China is not only the most important passenger car sales region for us, it is also the world’s leading market for electric cars”, says Hubertus Troska, Daimler AG Board Member responsible for Greater China. “We are extremely delighted to world-premiere the all-electric EQB here in China. With its seven seats, the new EQB meets the needs of very family-oriented customers. In addition to the right products, our local production footprint is one of the decisive factors for sustainable growth in China. That’s why we are looking forward to produce the all-electric EQB in Beijing.”

In China, the new EQB is being launched as a fully equipped top-of-the-range model with AMG Line and an output of 215 kW. In Europe, right from the start customers will have the choice between several models with front-wheel and all-wheel drive and various power levels, some rated at over 200 kW. The usable capacity of the batteries in Europe is 66.5 kWh. These batteries are manufactured at the Daimler plants in Kamenz (Germany) and Jawor (Poland). A particularly long-range version is also planned. The electrical consumption of the EQB 350 4MATIC in Europe, NEDC1: combined electrical consumption: 16.2 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km, range 478 km; WLTP[6]: combined electrical consumption: 19.2 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km, range 419 km.

In the current year, Mercedes-Benz Cars is pushing ahead rapidly with electrification. With the EQA, the EQB, the electric business saloon EQE and the EQS, a total of four new models from Mercedes-EQ will be presented. The Mercedes-Benz plug-in hybrid family, currently consisting of more than 20 model variants, is being renewed with electrified derivatives of the C-Class and the S-Class. For 2021, Mercedes-Benz Cars expects to increase the xEV share, i.e. of plug-in hybrids and fully electric vehicles, to around 13 percent. In addition, mild hybrids with starter-alternator and 48-volt system are conquering the product range, especially of the group’s luxury vehicles.

Generous space and variable, level boot
The new EQB (length/width/height: 4684/1834[7]/1667[8] millimetres) enriches Mercedes’ successful compact car family and is closely related to two models in particular: to the EQA, whose advanced drive technology it shares, and to the GLB compact SUV. This is where the long wheelbase (2829 millimetres), the spacious and variable interior and the third row of seats with two additional individual seats come from.

The amount of space is generous: the headroom in the first row of seats is 1035 millimetres, in the second it is 979 millimetres for the five-seater. With 87 millimetres, the knee space in the rear of the five-seater reaches a comfortable level. The boot is level and spacious: The load volume of 495 to 1710 or 465 to 1620 litres (figures for five- and seven-seaters respectively) has the qualities of a compact estate car. The inclination of the backrests in the second row can be adjusted in several stages as standard, and as an option it features longitudinally adjustment of 140 millimetres. This enables the boot to be enlarged by up to 190 litres and put to versatile use.

As an option (standard in China), the EQB has a third row of seats with two additional individual seats. The seats offer people up to a height of 1.65 metres a comfortable amount of space. Extensive safety features include extractable head restraints, seat belts with belt tensioners and force limiters on all outer seats and a side windowbag that also covers passengers in the third row. A total of up to four child seats can be fitted in rows two and three, plus one more in the front passenger seat. To increase luggage space, the third row seats can be lowered flush into the load floor.

Electro design aesthetics with corners and edges
The EQB interprets Mercedes-EQ’s Progressive Luxury in an edgy and characterful way. It features the typical Mercedes-EQ black panel grille with central star. A further distinctive design feature of the all-electric world of Mercedes-EQ vehicles is the continuous light strip at front and rear. A horizontal fibre-optic strip connects the daytime running lights of the full-LED headlamps, ensuring a high level of recognisability both in daylight and at night. The inside of the headlamps is finished to a high level of quality, detail and precision. Blue colour highlights within the headlamp reinforce the signature Mercedes-EQ appearance.

The function-oriented greenhouse with upright windscreen makes the comfortable interior possible. Circumferential and protective cladding elements structure the overall proportion. The muscular and sensuously modelled vehicle shoulder dominates the side view, which is further enhanced by the rise of the beltline. Outwardly positioned wheels give the EQB a powerful character and confident stance on the road. Exclusive to this model are light-alloy wheels in a bi- or tri-colour design, up to 20 inches in size, in some cases with rosé gold-coloured or blue decorative trim.

The LED tail lamps merge seamlessly into the tapered LED light strip. This underlines the horizontal sense of width of the EQB in the rear view. In addition, the number plate is placed on the bumper, which allows for a beautifully sculpted tailgate. The studded roof rails underline the high utility value of the new EQB.

The large body of the dashboard has a cut-out in the driver and passenger area. The driver faces a Widescreen Cockpit, with control and display via MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience). The robust character of the interior is underlined by tubular elements in an aluminium look. They sit as handles in the doors, in the centre console and in the instrument panel on the passenger side.

Depending on the design and equipment line, a spectacular backlit trim piece and rosé gold-coloured decorative elements on the air vents, seats and vehicle key provide clues to the electric character in the interior of the EQB. The instruments, with their electric car-specific displays, pick up on the same colour scheme with rosé gold-coloured and blue highlights.

The EQB achieves a very good drag value with a Cd value from 0.28. The frontal area A totals 2.53 m2. Among the most important aerodynamic measures are the completely closed cooling air control system in the upper section, the aerodynamically efficient front and rear aprons, a very smooth, almost completely enclosed underbody, specially optimised Aero wheels and specifically adapted front and rear wheel spoilers.

Efficient driving pleasure and Navigation with Electric Intelligence
ECO Assist offers a recuperation process optimised to the particular situation. It incorporates navigation data, traffic sign recognition and information from the vehicle sensors into its efficiency strategy. Anticipatory driving saves power, thereby extending the range.

The standard Navigation with Electric Intelligence also contributes to the effortless handling of the EQB in everyday life. It calculates the fastest route to the destination, including any necessary charging stops. On the basis of continual range simulations, the system makes allowance for any necessary charging stops as well as for numerous other factors, such as the topography and the weather. It is also able to react dynamically to changes, for instance in the traffic situation or personal driving style. In addition, the Navigation with Electric Intelligence ensures that the high-voltage battery is brought to an optimal charging temperature before a planned charging stop, if needed.

Sophisticated charging technology, large network and green power
At home or at public charging stations, the EQB can be conveniently charged at up to 11 kW with alternating current (AC) using the onboard charger. The charging time required for a full charge depends on the available infrastructure and the country-specific vehicle equipment. Charging at a Mercedes-Benz Wallbox is considerably faster than at a household socket.

And it is of course even faster at direct current (DC) fast-charging stations. Depending on the SoC (State of Charge) and the temperature of the high-voltage battery, the EQB charges at a corresponding charging station with a maximum power of up to 100 kW. The charging time is then just over 30 minutes from 10-80 percent SoC. For AC and DC charging, the EQB is equipped as standard in Europe and the USA with a CCS (Combined Charging Systems) connector in the right-hand side panel. In China, a country-specific charging solution with sockets on the right and left in the side wall is used, and charging times may also vary compared with the European version.

Via Mercedes me Charge, EQB drivers will be able to use what is currently the largest charging network in the world: this currently comprises more than 500,000 AC and DC charging stations across 31 countries. Mercedes me Charge allows Mercedes-EQ customers convenient use of the charging stations of various providers, while they also benefit from an integrated payment function with simple billing processes.

With Mercedes me Charge, customers can charge at more than 200,000 public charging stations across Europe, where Mercedes-Benz ensures subsequent compensation through green electricity.

Cooperative support for the driver and high level of crash safety
The EQB features intelligent driving assistance systems with cooperative support for the driver. Active Lane Keeping Assist and Active Brake Assist are fitted as standard. In many critical situations, the latter has the ability to prevent a collision or reduce its severity with autonomous braking. The system is also able to brake for stationary vehicles and crossing pedestrians at typical city speeds. The enhanced functions of the Driving Assistance Package include, for example, the turning manoeuvre function, the emergency corridor function, the exit warning function alerting the driver to approaching cyclists or vehicles, and a warning when pedestrians are detected near zebra crossings.

The EQB is also a true Mercedes when it comes to passive safety. Building on the robust bodyshell structure of the GLB, the body of the EQB was adapted to the special requirements of an electric car. The battery sits within a frame made out of extruded sections. This takes on a structural function which until now was maintained by the cross members in the underfloor. A battery guard in the front area of the battery is able to prevent the energy storage unit from being pierced by foreign objects.

Of course, the EQB had to pass the brand’s usual extensive crash test programme. Stringent requirements for the battery and all components carrying electrical current also apply.

The EQB in the global production network
Production of the EQB will commence in 2021 at two sites forming part of the production network of Mercedes-Benz Cars: at the Hungarian Mercedes-Benz plant in Kecskemét for the global market and at the German-Chinese joint venture BBAC in Beijing for the local market. Preparations, including staff qualification processes and reconstruction work, have already commenced at the plants. The EQB compact SUV will be the first purely electrically powered production vehicle from Hungary and will supplement the plug-in hybrid portfolio which comprises the CLA and CLA Shooting Brake. The A-Class will also be produced with plug-in hybrid drive at Kecskemét in future as well as at the German Mercedes-Benz plant in Rastatt, where the EQA is built.

Since it commenced production in 2012, the Hungarian Mercedes-Benz plant has continually increased in importance within the global production network of Mercedes-Benz Cars. In addition to digital networking, the strengths of the compact car production network include direct exchange with the lead plant for compact cars in Rastatt, Baden-Württemberg.

The battery systems for the compact Mercedes-EQ models produced in Europe are supplied by the Mercedes-Benz subsidiary Accumotive in Kamenz as well as by the battery factory in Jawor, Poland. Both factories were designed to operate as CO₂-neutral facilities from the outset.

DONGFENG PEUGEOT will launch a new range of SUVs featuring its new roaring Lion logo for its customers in China at the 2021 Shanghai Motor Show.

The new vehicles will be accompanied with a new brand strategy: the new French Chic. The new range of PEUGEOT 4008, 4008 PHEV and 5008s will start from 169 700 to 263 700 yuan (£18,899 to £29,370). The new French Chic SUVs distinguish themselves through four pillars: design, quality, dynamism and connectivity in order to meet the growing expectations of PEUGEOT’s Chinese customers.

DONGFENG PEUGEOT will also strengthen the brand’s customer experience through new customer care, vehicle maintenance and warranty policies through its Five Care Promises and Four Guarantees Plus commitments.

From 19 to 28 April, visitors will be able to discover the entire DONGFENG PEUGEOT range at the Auto Shanghai 2021 show. In addition to the new French Chic SUVs, PEUGEOT’s electrified range will also be on show, including the e-2008, the new 4008 PHEV 4WD and the 508 L PHEV saloon.

The new family of PEUGEOT SUVs manufactured in China includes the 4008, 4008 PHEV and 5008 models. They reflect the designed by PEUGEOT, made for China strategy and are the basis of the new French Chic strategy.

The new PEUGEOT 5008 is the flagship of the brand’s new French Chic SUVs family, thanks to its spacious and high-quality interior. Prices for the 5008 range from range from 187 700 yuan (£20,905) to 263 700 yuan (£29,370).

To complement Nissan’s range of striking crossovers, next summer (2022) will see the introduction of the all-new X-Trail, whose world debut took place today at Auto Shanghai 2021.

The all-new X-Trail will be the fourth generation of the successful family-oriented model and will retain the formula of the previous generations, offering a flexible and versatile interior for buyers with a sense of adventure combined with the latest Nissan on-board technologies. Like the current X-Trail, the new iteration will be available with a folding third row of seats offering extra convenience for families and friends to share rich experiences away from home, but it will remain sufficiently compact for easy parking manoeuvres.

e-POWER
The all-new X-Trail will be available with Nissan’s e-POWER installation, which is a unique Nissan innovation and a key component in the company’s Intelligent Mobility strategy.

The unique element of the e-POWER installation is that the petrol engine is used solely to generate electricity, while the wheels are driven only by the electric motor. This means the engine can always run within its optimal range, leading to superior fuel efficiency and lower CO2 emissions compared with a traditional internal combustion engine. It is a powertrain innovation for customers who are not ready to embrace a full electric vehicle, but want to enjoy the advantages of an electrified powertrain.

With the 4WD version, the all-new X-Trail will continue to be Nissan’s natural choice for adventurous families, who will enjoy its rugged versatility, supported by an advanced snow, gravel or mud configurable all-wheel drive system that will inspire confidence in challenging conditions, both on-road and off.

Full crossover range
The arrival of the new X-Trail in the summer of 2022 will complete a dramatic overhaul and reinvention of Nissan’s eye-catching range.

From the introduction of the striking and audacious second generation Juke in November 2019, via the global unveil of the stunning all-new, fully electric Ariya crossover in July 2020 and the unveil of the third generation of the iconic, pioneering Qashqai in February 2021, the new X-Trail demonstrates Nissan’s bold, innovative drive for an electrified future under the banner of Nissan NEXT, Nissan’s business transformation plan.

The Maserati Levante Hybrid is presented to the world in both a physical and digital World Premiere event. In fact, the dual nature of Maserati is shown at the Shanghai Auto Show for its live presentation, and, for the rest of the world, in a virtual launch event on the brand’s website (houseof.maserati.com).

With the Brand’s first electrified SUV, Maserati takes a major step forward in its strategy for electrification, which began last year with the Ghibli Hybrid.

“Faster. Greener. Unique”, Levante Hybrid is faster than a diesel, more sustainable than diesel or gasoline, and unique in its specific characteristics.

The Maserati SUV, which has already made an impact in the history of the Brand with its record-breaking figures, now presses ahead into a future in which all new Trident models will be electrified.

Maserati is innovative by nature, and with Levante it pursues the philosophy behind its entry into the world of electrification: the aim of improving performance while staying true to the Brand’s values, delivering speed and agility while saving fuel and reinforcing the Trident’s dedication to driving pleasure and luxury. Levante Hybrid combines the 4 cylinder, 2 litre engine with a 48 volt Hybrid system to recover energy during deceleration and braking. The hybrid car weighs less than the 6 cylinder engine equivalent (both diesel and gasoline), and above all has an even better weight distribution since the battery is placed in the rear without compromising the load capacity and optimally balancing the masses of the vehicle. All designed to make Levante Hybrid even more agile and fun to drive.

Thanks to a maximum power output of 330 hp and torque of 450 Nm delivered from just 2,250 rpm, the performance data of the new Levante Hybrid, only available with all-wheel drive, is impressive: a top speed of over 240 km/h and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 6 seconds.

In terms of appearance, the Levante Hybrid launch version is characterised by a new metallic tri-coat colour called Azzurro Astro, available as part of the Brand’s customisation programme, Maserati Fuoriserie.

Other exterior and interior details contribute to this car’s immediately recognisable design: some are in blue, the shade chosen to identify hybrid cars, already used by Maserati on Ghibli Hybrid.

On the exterior, blue characterises the three iconic side air ducts, the brake calipers and the C-pillar logo. The same blue shade reappears inside the car, specifically on the embroidered seams of the seats.

Levante Hybrid is connected, thanks to the new Maserati Connect program.
Having your Maserati connected at all times enables an eye to be kept on the car’s health, and Maserati Connect will alert the driver when a service is due, improving the customer care experience. With a Smartphone or Smartwatch, drivers can stay in contact with their car via the Maserati Connect App; this is also possible from home via their virtual personal assistant (Amazon Alexa & Google Assist).

Only weeks after launching the new BMW M3 Competition Saloon and BMW M4 Competition Coupé in the UK, BMW M GmbH is set to add another two variants to the model line-up by offering the M xDrive all-wheel drive system for the high-performance sports cars in the premium midsize segment for the first time.

With more driven wheels, the new BMW M3 Competition Saloon M xDrive and BMW M4 Competition Coupé M xDrive take the exclusive M feeling to an even higher level. The improvements in traction, handling stability and agility enable both models to reach 62mph from standstill in only 3.5 seconds, making them 0.4 seconds quicker on the sprint than their rear-wheel drive counterparts.

The power from the 510hp straight-six engine fitted in the new models is directed via an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic. The M-specific all-wheel drive system then divides it between the front and rear wheels as required to enhance agility, directional stability, traction and track-focused dynamics. The all-wheel drive system has a rear-biased setup in classic M style. This system allows the driver to experience even more of the hallmark M performance characteristics reflected, among other things, in even quicker acceleration.

By introducing the M xDrive versions to the range, BMW M GmbH now offers an unrivalled variety of high-performance midsize models. All four versions of the latest model generation provide their own individual recipe for an exhilarating high-performance sports car that offers unrestricted everyday usability.

The production of the BMW M3 Competition Saloon M xDrive and BMW M4 Competition Coupé M xDrive will get underway in July 2021.

Customers will enjoy even more choice later in the year when these new models will be joined by the latest version of the BMW M4 Convertible.

M xDrive and Active M Differential for superior handling dynamics

The M xDrive system’s specially tuned power transmission control already provides an entertaining alternative to rear-wheel drive for a host of high-performance models from BMW M GmbH. Teaming up with the all-wheel drive system is the Active M Differential that also ensures fully variable distribution of drive torque between the rear wheels as the situation demands. This helps to transfer the torque to the road without any loss of power, especially when the car is being pushed hard or has less grip on one side. The M xDrive system and the Active M Differential – complete with its integrated M-specific traction control – link up with the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system to ensure precisely judged interaction for the driving situation at hand. The clear aim is to produce a supremely dynamic driving experience that blends the customary M feeling with noticeably enhanced traction and directional stability.

The M xDrive system uses an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch in the transfer case for smoothly adjustable, fully variable distribution of drive torque between the front and rear wheels. The multi-plate clutch’s oil supply has been optimised to keep the variable power splitting mechanism performing effectively even under hard driving on the track. The task of transmitting power to the front and rear differentials is handled by driveshafts engineered specifically for the BMW M3 Competition Saloon with M xDrive and BMW M4 Competition Coupé with M xDrive.

The output shafts that relay the drive torque to the wheels are likewise bespoke items. The all-wheel drive system has a rear-biased set-up in classic M style. Normally, the drive power is channelled entirely to the rear wheels, with the front wheels only being brought into play when the rears cannot feed any more power to the road.

The transfer case features a bespoke control unit and integrated wheel slip limitation. This enables it to compensate for any differences in rotational speed between the front and rear wheels exceptionally quickly without having to involve the central DSC management. This results in enhanced all-wheel drive performance and supreme handling for which M models are renowned in dynamic driving situations, such as powering through corners in a controlled drift.

Both models put their power down via standard M light-alloy wheels measuring 19 inches in diameter at the front and 20 inches at the rear. The forged wheels in twin-spoke design with a Bicolour Jet Black finish are fitted with 275/35 R19 tyres at the front and 285/30 R20s at the rear. Specially designed track tyres with the same dimensions are also available as an option.

Major technical modifications optimise performance characteristics

The all-wheel-drive technology in the new BMW M3 Competition Saloon M xDrive and BMW M4 Competition Coupé M xDrive is complemented by a double-joint spring strut front axle redesigned for these models and it features specially adapted front axle geometry and an individually tuned steering ratio. These extensive bespoke modifications for the all-wheel drive system ensure that both the existing pure rear-wheel drive variants and their new M xDrive counterparts stand out with their engineered-without-compromise, signature M steering characteristics. The all-wheel drive models additionally benefit from a specially adapted version of the engine oil supply system designed to handle extremely dynamic performance.

Three M xDrive modes enable an individualised M feeling

M xDrive also allows the driver to tailor the all-wheel-drive system’s characteristics and performance to the driving situation and their individual preferences. The desired setting can be selected directly from the Setup menu of the M-specific operating system, where there is a choice of three different power transmission modes. In the default 4WD setting, the all-wheel drive system offers maximum traction and precision handling while always maintaining a distinctly rear-biased power split. Activating 4WD Sport mode directs an even greater proportion of the engine’s torque to the rear wheels. The linear build-up of lateral forces so characteristic of M models now also makes it possible to execute controlled drifts. Drivers can also switch off the DSC system altogether and engage 2WD mode, where drive power is relayed solely to the rear wheels.

With the standard-fit M Traction Control on UK models, traction can be finely adjusted through ten stages in this setting in the same way as on the rear-wheel drive models. This form of power transmission without any intervention from the chassis control systems to stabilise the vehicle allows seasoned drivers to enjoy a pure driving experience and hone their skills with the help of the M Drift Analyser.

Drivers can set and store their preferred M xDrive mode as part of the two individual M1 and M2 configurations, together with the settings for engine characteristics, damper response, steering characteristics, braking system and other parameters. Either configuration can then be called up instantly at any time by pressing one of the two M buttons on the steering wheel.

hey have a brand-new motorcycle department which is managed by specialist Mark Bryan, who has been around motorcycles his whole life and has great expert knowledge from within the industry.
They are pleased to announce that they will also have dedicated motorcycle sales at The May Sale, The Classic Sale at Silverstone, and The NEC Classic Motor Show Sale this year, alongside the classic car and automobilia auctions.

Going under the hammer in The May Sale 2021 is this 1977 MV Agusta 850 Monza. This striking motorcycle is UK registered from new with just two previous owners. It is unrestored and has been dry stored for the last 15 years. The motorcycle has had its brakes recently rebuilt and is guided at a sensible price of £40,000 – £50,000.

Another excellent motorcycle confirmed for the sale is this c1947 Norton Model 40 Manx. This motorcycle was ridden by Ex-Dennis Langton at the Manx Grand Prix bike between 1948 and 1953 – its best overall finish was 30th in 1953 at an average speed of 76.27mph. The motorcycle is mostly original with great patina and is completed with pictured spaces, paddock stand, history file with numerous period photographs and much more. Silverstone Auctions will be offering this on the 22nd May at a guided price of £25,000 – £30,000.

Also confirmed for the sale is this 1973 Triumph X-75 Hurricane. This iconic motorcycle is just 1 of only 1,152 produced and one of the most exciting classic British bikes as well as one of the rarest. The bike has been restored to a good standard having done only 2,400 miles since and has been with the same owner for the last 26 years. Silverstone Auctions will be offering this Craig Vetter-designed, Triumph triple at a guided price of £15,000 – £20,000.

Superbly presented is this 1957 Norton Model 30 International. This is just one of only 70 special-order bikes built in 1957 and is a stunning example of Norton’s legendary long-lived Model 30 International. The car has been restored by Robin James in 2004 to a very high standard and has been dry stored for the last few years. The motorcycle comes with a good history file including old photos and restoration receipts and Silverstone Auctions are offering the Norton 30 International for £20,000 – £25,000.

Look beyond the obvious for safety clues on country roads, says GEM

Road safety and breakdown organisation GEM Motoring Assist is encouraging drivers to look beyond the obvious for clues that will keep them safe on rural road journeys this summer.

As traffic levels rise with the easing of coronavirus restrictions, GEM anticipates large numbers of people making the most of sunny days for journeys in the country.

To stay safe on a rural road, it’s vital to use not only the information given by signs and road markings, but also to do your own detective work to anticipate potential hazards on the road ahead, says GEM.

GEM chief executive Neil Worth commented: “Driving in the countryside is usually a great pleasure, with good views, quiet roads and a variety of interesting terrain. But country roads are used by many different people and vehicles, so it’s vital to look for the clues – some obvious, others less so – as to what might be round the next bend.

“That’s why we’re urging drivers to expect the unexpected and to make sure they always have time and space to stop safely if necessary.

“What’s round the corner on a rural road with restricted visibility? It could be another car or a motorcycle coming towards you too fast, a group of cyclists on a ride out, sheep or cattle crossing the road, a horse and rider, a wild animal, a slow-moving farm tractor…

“Until you have perfect sight of what’s ahead, you need to be ready to anticipate what could be there. By adjusting your speed and position accordingly, you’re doing your bit to keep yourself and the other road users safe.”

Simple detective work can often provide useful information about what may be on the road ahead. Here are some examples:

  • If you see mud on the road, expect to meet tractors or other slow-moving farm vehicles.
  • If you smell (or see) fresh-cut grass, look out for the mowing vehicle round the next bend.
  • The sight or smell of horse manure tells you that horses and riders are close by.
  • If there are wheelie bins at the end of driveways, then watch out for the bin lorry.

GEM has prepared a selection of five simple driver tips to help improve rural road safety:

What are the signs telling you?
Make sure you use any existing signage to help you. Usual signs include a series of white chevron signs on a black background, indicating a sharp bend. Slow down, even if the posted speed limit is 30 mph.

Room for two?
The narrowness of country lanes means that passing places are sometimes provided into embankments or verges. Be prepared to reverse into these if necessary.

Safe speeds
Stay safe by never exceeding the signed limit. Country lanes are often used as a short cut or an escape from congested main roads. Using them may actually be a longer way round to your destination leading you to be in a hurry. Slow down.

Bumpy roads
Country lanes may be in a poor state of repair. At any sign of this be ready for pot-holes and other broken surfaces that can seriously damage your vehicle.

Think horse
Give horse riders a very slow and wide berth and keep your distance until it becomes safe to pull past.

Volvo Cars teams up with world’s leading mobility technology platform DiDi for self-driving test fleet

Volvo Cars, a global leader in automotive safety, and DiDi Autonomous Driving, the self-driving technology arm of Didi Chuxing, the world’s leading mobility technology platform, have signed a strategic collaboration agreement on autonomous vehicles for DiDi’s self-driving test fleet.

Volvo Cars will provide DiDi with XC90 cars equipped with necessary backup systems for functions such as steering and braking, and collaborate with DiDi Autonomous Driving to integrate the additional software and hardware required to make it fully ready for autonomous drive.

The XC90 cars will be the first to integrate DiDi Gemini, DiDi Autonomous Driving’s new self-driving hardware platform, and are intended to be deployed for ride-hailing in DiDi’s network in the future.

The agreement reinforces Volvo Cars’ position as a provider of cars and the partner of choice for self-driving fleets, building on its reputation as a global leader in automotive safety.

The built-in backup systems and safety features on the XC90s, combined with DiDi Autonomous Driving’s advanced self-driving system, will eventually allow the cars to operate without safety drivers in robotaxi services.

Building on today’s agreement, Volvo Cars and DiDi Autonomous Driving look to build a long-term partnership as DiDi continues to expand its autonomous test fleets across China and the US, and scales up its commercial robotaxi operations.

As the world’s leading shared-mobility technology platform, DiDi uses its deep expertise in network operation and large bank of real-world driving data to develop commercial autonomous transportation services by collaborating with the world’s premium car makers.

In 2020, Volvo Cars provided DiDi with Volvo XC60s for use in Shanghai’s first pilot robotaxi programme. People in certain areas of Shanghai could book trips by robotaxi in the DiDi app and be driven autonomously, while the cars were monitored by a safety driver and engineer.

Polestar has revealed a special version of the Polestar 1 electric performance hybrid that will reach end of production later this year.

“It’s hard to believe that our beautiful halo car comes to the end of its production life later this year,” comments Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO. “We pushed boundaries with this car, not only in terms of engineering but also in its design and execution. Polestar 1 set the tone for our brand and its genes are evident in Polestar 2 – as they will be in our future cars to come.”

A technical tour de force, the electric performance hybrid has a light-weight body made from carbon fibre reinforced polymer, twin rear electric motors with genuine torque vectoring and high-performance components like Akebono brakes and adjustable Öhlins dampers.

With a combined power output of 609 hp and 1,000 Nm of torque, and a purely electric driving range of 124 km (WLTP) – still the longest of any hybrid car in the world – Polestar 1 is a performance car that can be driven as a full EV in daily use, doubling as a great long-distance GT at any moment.

“This car was not designed to fit into a box,” elaborates Thomas Ingenlath. “We didn’t design it to compete with other cars, and neither did we design it to suit a specific target customer. Polestar 1 was about pushing our own boundaries, exploring a new era for Polestar and launching the brand with a strong statement – and it’s done a great job of capturing the hearts and minds of fans, press and the lucky customers who own one.”

A limited number of build slots remain for final 2021 production. The new special edition features a bespoke matte gold exterior paint job with matching callipers and black wheels. Inside, colour-matched gold stitching gives the interior an even more unique feel. A maximum of 25 will be built.
