Land Rover Classic is continuing the formidable expedition legacy of the original Defender with a limited production run of adventure-ready Defender Works V8 Trophy vehicles for an exclusive competition at Eastnor Castle in 2021.
Based on the re-engineered 2012-2016 Defender Works V8 specification developed by Land Rover Classic, including 405PS / 515Nm 5.0-litre V8 petrol powertrain, eight-speed ZF automatic transmission and comprehensive uprated suspension, steering and braking packages, the Trophy vehicles feature a wide range of additional upgrades specifically tailored for off-road use.
Twenty-five examples of the Defender Works V8 Trophy, in a mixture of 90 and 110 Station Wagon body designs, will be exclusively finished in a unique Eastnor Yellow paint colour with matching 16-inch steel wheels. Contrasting Narvik Black paintwork features on the wheel arches, bonnet and rear door. The purpose-built vehicles also receive LED headlamps, a Heritage front grille, unique Land Rover Trophy badging and event participation graphics personalised to each customer.
The Defender Works V8 Trophy is designed to tackle the most demanding endurance challenges. Additional all-terrain kit includes a front winch, multi-point expedition cage, roof rack, underbody protection, A-bar, raised air intake, LED spotlights and mud-terrain tyres.
Inside, the instantly recognisable 4×4 benefits from full black Windsor leather upholstery with Recaro sports seats, contrast yellow stitching and a bespoke Land Rover Trophy clock face by Elliot Brown. Land Rover Classic’s own Classic Infotainment System with integrated navigation and mobile device connectivity is also fitted.
Later this year*, Defender Works V8 Trophy customers will be invited to compete in an exclusive three-day adventure at Eastnor Castle in Herefordshire – the spiritual home of Land Rover all-terrain training, testing and development. This will be the first time customers drive their car.

On seeing their Defender Works V8 Trophy for the first time, customers and their co-drivers will make their first marks by adding their names and country flags to the vehicle. They will then embark on a range of challenges inspired by famous global adventures and competitions spanning more than seven decades of Land Rover production.
Expert one-to-one tuition will be provided as part of the adventure, giving customers a unique opportunity to develop extreme driving techniques and skills in their own vehicle, before putting their training to the test. Everyone will compete for a range of prizes, including a grand prize for the overall winner – to be announced later in 2021.
Familiar faces from Land Rover’s adventure heritage feature in the Defender Works V8 Trophy launch film, including racing driver, stunt driver and Land Rover ambassador Jessica Hawkins, alongside Camel Trophy participants such as 1989 event winner Bob Ives. A number of these experts will also be on-hand at the Land Rover Trophy to share their knowledge and experiences.
The Land Rover Trophy event will be supported by the new Defender and carefully selected brand partners Elliot Brown, Fat Face and Musto, who have created complementary products specifically for Defender Works V8 Trophy customers.

V8 DEFENDER HISTORY
V8 powertrains in the Land Rover Defender and its production predecessors started with the Series III Stage 1 V8 of 1979. The carburetted 3.5-litre Rover V8 produced 90bhp.
The Land Rover One Ten from 1983, and Ninety from 1984, used the same 3.5-litre Rover V8 engine as the Series III Stage 1 V8, but in 113bhp form, uprated to 135bhp from 1987.
For North American Specification (NAS) Defender 90s and 110s only, from 1992, a 182bhp fuel-injected 3.9-litre version of the Rover V8 was fitted, along with a four-speed automatic transmission.
In 1998, the fuel-injected 190bhp 4.0-litre V8 from the second-generation Range Rover was fitted to a limited run of 50th Anniversary Defender 90s, with a four-speed automatic transmission.
5.0-litre naturally-aspirated 2018 Defender Works V8 became the first official V8-powered Land Rover Defender to be introduced since 1998.

The damage was mainly cosmetic but was not repaired by owner Tom Casson
Subsequently sold, re-registered as DYG 465B and repaired with a brand new factory bonnet. Repairs stalled and nothing further happened When the owner passed away in 2016, it was offered by ACA (still with 2,805 miles) and sold for £115,000

From the accompanying Heritage Certificate, we can see that #1E 1064 is a Series 1 4.2-litre, Open two-seater in right-hand drive. Finished in Opalescent Maroon with Grey leather and a Black soft-top, the date of manufacture is listed as 15th December 1964 and it was dispatched on the last day of the year to Jaguar Distributors of Leeds, onwards to Somerset Road Garages and registered TC22 before being collected by its first owner, Tom Casson of Barkisland Hall.
From the fascinating History File that is supplied with the car, it appears that Mr Casson enjoyed an unfortunate relationship with driving and the law in his earlier years (more later) and, in 1965, that enjoyment of driving and speed evidently continued as illustrated by the fact that the E-Type covered 2,805 miles in the first three months of his ownership and the Jag’s demise took place at Snetterton Circuit in Norfolk during a race for (presumably) production cars when it left the circuit sustaining substantial damage to the left-hand side. It would appear that no attempt was made to repair the car and it certainly didn’t turn a wheel in Tom Casson’s ownership again. It’s not clear at what point he sold the car, but we understand from the file that DYG 465B, as it was now registered, was in its second owner’s hands for 40 years before he passed away and although some repairs were carried out (floor pan, rear wing and sill) and a brand new factory bonnet fitted, it still hadn’t turned a wheel since Snetterton in ‘65.
The car was subsequently offered for sale by Anglia Car Auctions on behalf of the last owner’s widow and despite being guided at £50-£70,000, changed hands at a remarkable £116,600. Our vendors are classic car specialists and, with the substantial growth in business resulting from last year’s Lockdown, they have decided to concentrate on other projects and we are delighted to offer this remarkable Jaguar for sale. Still showing only 2,805 miles, the car sits really well and although in need of a total restoration, it doesn’t feel ‘down at heel’, so hopefully will be a straightforward project. This ‘Sleeping Beauty’ from Coventry awaits a Handsome Prince’.
The box containing the vehicle’s history is surprisingly full for a car that was only used for three months. It contains the original ‘Green’ Log Book, the Heritage Certificate, an old V5, a few photographs and the catalogue from the ACA Sale in 2016 with the relevant invoice and some press cuttings about the sale. However, the majority of the contents relate to Tom Casson (5/07/1918 – 9/12/1992) and his family. Someone in the past has gone to a great deal of trouble to find out as much as possible about the young Yorkshire millionaire ‘playboy’, the first owner of TC 22 and have commissioned two substantial genealogical reports about “Tom Casson of Barkisland Hall” and “Cassons and Heskeths” (he was twice married to the much-acclaimed young actress, Audrey Hesketh). The file contains Birth and Death Certificates, photographs of Barkisland Hall and Audrey Hesketh, Wills, property and financial dealings of the wool merchant family, his wartime Army career and imprisonment as a Japanese prisoner of war and a number of newspaper cuttings about an incident in 1940 when he appeared before Manchester Assizes accused of killing a 17-year old cyclist who was on her way to work at 6.15 in the morning. The rich and handsome 21-year old bachelor had been at a party after the Grand National and claims he must have fallen asleep at the wheel. He failed to stop and drove home immediately taking the car to the family garage and asking them to repair it as quickly as possible. The details are in the report but the result was that he was sent to prison for 18 months and banned from driving for 10 years. Taking into account his seven previous court appearances for dangerous driving (at 21) the Judge summed up by saying “Your record as a motorist is shocking. You are one of those who bring scandal on the name of motorists, breaking every rule. I would add that you are not fit to drive a car in your present state of mind, perhaps in ten years time you may be different”. Whether he calmed down in motoring terms we cannot know but chucking his brand new E-Type into the tyre wall at Snetterton 25 years later suggests probably not.
There is much more about this man’s life and loves in the file but that’s not relevant here, however, it is difficult to stand quietly next to TC 22 without getting a feel of the man’s aura. Having never been driven since Tom Casson jumped out of it and headed for the bar all those years ago, you just feel he’s not too far away and this resting Jaguar is a ‘portal’ to a different world, a world of money and wild parties and actresses and motor racing and glamour.

But I kept going. You see, I have always been a millionaire, it’s just I haven’t always had the money! It’s a mental thing; without a millionaire mindset how can you possibly be a millionaire? I’ve tried everything. I had a bar: The Upsidedown Flying Crocodile Bar… it failed…
I had a catering business: Butties World Famous Sandwiches… it flopped…
I had a publishing business and got utterly shafted by the government!
I remember back when I was so ridiculously broke, celebrating having a positive balance of $180 (£100) in my account. That’s the only money I had, no assets, no property, no savings … Zip, nada, zilch!
This has been some white knuckle ride I can tell you. And the great thing for you is that because I’ve gone through hell and high water; waged war and beaten my monsters and demons, I know pretty much what YOU need to do in order to join me in the Kingdom of Wealth.
After failing in just about every venture I set my attention to I had almost reconciled myself to the fact that I would probably never get the money to become a fully rounded millionaire. I almost settled for ‘pseudo millionairism’, to be yet another wannabe pretender… Millionaire’s mouth, pauper’s bank balance!

You’ve seen it, you get it rammed down your gullet every single day… Occasionally some jerk comes along with clever copy, again you think, “this is it, finally I’ve found the answer”. I’ll tell you, it’s the heady scent of money and I positively reek of it … I AM FILTHY, STINKING RICH I Got Blingingly Rich Selling the Same Old, Same Old… Bla, Bla, Bleedin Bla
I did it using systems that work; systems that have been making man rich since he first invented commerce.
I quickly worked out that you’re only given a finite period in which to make the most of your life, so you’re equipped with very limited resources in time and energy. I therefore made a conscious decision: Do the very best I can do, in anything and everything I do.
This way I can always say when my time’s up: “I tried, I did everything I possibly could do to attain wealth, freedom and happiness … I gave it all I had”.
This way, if I was to fail, I could hold my head high and turn to the fellow residents waiting for God in the retirement home, smelling of piss and stale breath, I could say: “I could do no more”.
It’s very easy to sell garbage. Millions make $billions every year doing it, but for me? For me, it would be a betrayal of everything I stand for, it would be a total waste of my life’s energies.
As I said earlier ‘I have always been a millionaire, at times I just didn’t have the money’.
I quickly worked out that I need dirty old cash in order to become truly wealthy!
Now it occurred to me that very few people are born with all the qualities and assets needed to make it alone. Sure, there are those that think they have it but generally, when you pick through the bones, there’s a bigger picture hiding in the shadows.
Those advantaged enough to get it handed to them on a plate, you know the sort. Daddy lives in a big house, with a big company, he pays the monthly credit card bills, pays the down-payment on the house etc. etc. the ones that arrogantly look down upon us peasants!
Well, you know what? Fuck them! … They wouldn’t know the first thing about making it alone!
I know that probably sounds a little bitter and resentful and you know what? I am slightly! I wish I’d have had it a lot easier, been handed a privileged existence, but I wasn’t, and neither were you. Then again, they do say the struggle makes you a better person?
I certainly could do it all over again using EXACTLY what I’m going to share with you and thankfully, I do have a healthy respect for those who want it too.
