  • 500 logo on the front and FIAT to the rear for 500X
  • Tipo now has three trim levels with new standard specifications
  • 500X and Tipo both also available in (RED) trim levels as with the rest of the Fiat range
  • Both available to order now

Fiat UK has announced model year 2022 updates to its ever-popular 500X and Tipo line-ups. With updated standard specifications across each range, both are available to order from Fiat retailers now.

The 500X MY22 exterior has been revamped, gaining the 500 logo to the front and the new FIAT lettering to the rear. These two design cues add modernity to the 500X make the 500X even more contemporary with a nod to the look and feel of the New 500.

The 500X MY22 is available in the Club, Cross and Sport trim levels, and in two body variants: Hatchback and the newly-announced Dolcevita soft top.

Club receives 16-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning, cruise control and seven-inch touchscreen, and is priced from £22,085 OTR. Cross provides buyers with a more rugged exterior and includes rear-view parking camera, 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights and automatic dual-zone climate control, priced from £23,585 OTR for the hatchback and £26,235 OTR for the Dolcevita. Top-of-the-range Sport trim has alcantara steering wheel, puddle lights, body-coloured bumpers and side skirts, and colour TFT screen, and is priced at £25,085 OTR for the hatchback and £27,735 OTR for the Dolcevita. All trim levels come with the efficient Firefly 1.0-litre unit with six-speed manual transmission.

The new Tipo MY22 line-up consists of three trim levels – Tipo, City Life and Cross – available as hatchback only.

Tipo receives adaptive cruise control, electric heated door mirrors, seven-inch touchscreen with DAB, bluetooth and new 16-inch wheels and is priced from £19,595 OTR. City Life trim includes 17-inch alloy wheels, full LED headlights and rear lights, 7-inch full colour digital cluster, fog lights, and driver seat electric lumbar support and is priced from £20,595 OTR. The Tipo Cross featuring a different exterior look with more rugged bumpers and roof bars receives, over and above City Life, a rearview parking camera, front and rear parking sensors, auto high beam, integrated Sat Nav and body-coloured door mirrors and is priced from £22,595 OTR.

Citroën reveals new C5 Aircross: absolute comfort in a more assertive and prestigious SUV design

  • New Citroën C5 Aircross has been redesigned to enhance its presence on the road, with a hi-tech and distinguished new look.
  • Updates include a striking new front end, new 18-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels and fresh personalisation options – as well as a distinctive new three-dimensional light signature at the rear.
  • New C5 Aircross continues to offer Citroën Advanced Comfort® suspension, features new Citroën Advanced Comfort® seats and boasts driver assistance technologies for a comfortable and serene drive.
  • New Citroën C5 Aircross will be available at Citroën UK retailers from Q2 2022.

Citroën has unveiled significant changes to C5 Aircross, including an updated front end design that features a new interpretation of the iconic Citroën logo.

Positioned in the centre of the grille, the updated badging is not the only noticeable feature of the new-look C5 Aircross. The V-shaped LED daytime running light signature gives a hi-tech, stronger-looking 3D effect to the front lights, whilst the upright design of the front grille adds to the robust stance of the vehicle.

With more than 260,000 sales since its launch in 2018, C5 Aircross has certainly made its mark in the highly competitive C-SUV segment, due to its significant amount of on-board space, its modularity and – above all – its unrivalled comfort. Thanks to the model’s Plug-in Hybrid technology, C5 Aircross users can travel up to 34 miles in full-electric mode with zero tailpipe emissions. With the ability to charge at 7.4kW as standard, plugging into a domestic 32A wallbox allows C5 Aircross PHEV to charge fully in under two hours. The brand’s MyCitroën smartphone app makes it easy to schedule charging too, or to precondition the car’s climate control, as well as to check the level of charge, or the charging rate, from wherever you are.

New C5 Aircross has been designed to be aerodynamic, with stylish and functional ‘air curtains’ positioned at either side of the front bumper. Highlighted by a choice of subtle Colour Packs, these stylistic touches help with the upmarket positioning of the car. The main air intake in the centre also becomes more dynamic and elegant, thanks to its sharp lines that echo the style of the central air intakes of New C4 and New C5 X. The glossy aluminium skid plate on the lower part of the front bumper makes the front end look more dynamic and gives it a more purposeful appearance.

New C5 Aircross features a distinctive posture, expressed through its high and horizontal bonnet, as well as the chrome ‘C’ side signature reinforcing the floating effect of the roof. The attributes of a powerful and reassuring SUV also appear at the sides of the vehicle: ground clearance of 230mm, large 720mm-diameter wheels, 360° protection including Airbump® panels and wheel arch extensions, distinctive roof bars and a commanding driving position.

New 18-inch diamond-cut ‘Pulsar’ alloy wheels, as well as gloss black door mirrors, enhance the elegance of the car. Gloss black roof bars with new matt black inserts and new Airbump® colours echo the stylish tones of the front-end inserts.

New C5 Aircross is now available in six body colours: Polar White, Pearlescent White, Perla Nera Black, Platinum Grey, Cumulus Grey, and a new colour called Eclipse Blue. The new colours of the Colour Packs feature on the front air intakes and the Airbump® panels. Four new Colour Packs are available: Glossy Black, Dark Chrome, Anodised Bronze and Anodised Blue.

“C5 Aircross has been recognised since its launch as the most comfortable and flexible SUV in its category, and has now been given a makeover to assert a more prestigious, modern and dynamic personality. While building on its strengths of comfort, on-board spaciousness and modularity, it has matured to become more elegant and dynamic, with sharper exterior styling and more modern high-quality colours, and materials for the interior.”
Pierre-Yves Couineau, New C5 Aircross Project Manager

New C5 Aircross gets a new 10-inch touchscreen in the modern passenger compartment. This new, larger screen improves ergonomics by offering direct-access to climate control functions and is positioned higher on the dashboard. The new 10-inch touchscreen, featuring Citroën’s My Citroën Drive satellite navigation, will be standard equipment in all UK versions.

In addition, the fully customisable 12.3-inch digital driver’s display provides all essential and customisable information directly in the driver’s eye-line: navigation maps, information on active driver-assistance systems, information on the operating status of the hybrid drivetrain – all ensuring that the driver’s eyes stay on the road for completely safe driving.

New C5 Aircross is equipped with the new generation of Citroën Advanced Comfort® seats already present in New C4, and forthcoming with New C5 X models. Composed of high-density foam in the core of the seat, with an extra 15mm layer of foam and a specific structure, Citroën Advanced Comfort® seats offer the very best in terms of passenger and driver comfort. Support is assured for the longer term, thanks to a special type of durable foam that resists sagging over time.

Comfort is emphasised further with the Progressive Hydraulic Cushions® suspension that is exclusive to Citroën, and which allows for the absorption of bumps in the road, keeping passengers in absolute comfort. Meanwhile, drivers and passengers can relax thanks to acoustic laminated front windows, which amplify the cocoon effect within the car.

The seats wear a new structured and contemporary fabric for the entry-level versions, a new soft-touch Alcantara® on selected versions, and there is also a new high-end perforated leather option. The armrests and the central console are trimmed with a new black leather-effect fabric and the dashboard with a new textured black leather-effect insert.

The updated model is available with a choice of four new Advanced Comfort ambiences. New blue stitching decorates the seats, door panels and dashboard on all ambiences in a very coherent and elegant way. The ‘Wild Black’ ambience replaces the previous ‘Wild Grey’ ambience, with a new black textured fabric mixed with a new grey leather-effect fabric and blue stitching. The ‘Urban Black’ ambience combines new black Alcantara® trim and a black leather-effect fabric. The ‘Metropolitan Black’ ambience replaces the ‘Metropolitan Grey’ ambience, with a new black grained leather and new grey leather-effect fabric. Finally, the ‘Hype Black’ ambience has been refreshed, with a subtle blend between the new perforated ‘Paloma’ leather and ‘Blue Nappa’ leather.

The central console has been modernised, with a black leather-effect material and chrome touches that underline the new layout of the controls. There is the new, hi-tech e-Toggle gear selector (on Plug-In Hybrid and EAT8 automatic versions), a new driving mode selection button, a new layout for the optional Grip Control function and, on PHEV versions, an intuitive selector for choosing the desired driving mode (Electric, Hybrid or Sport). The central console also integrates a large storage compartment housing connectivity solutions, with two USB-ports and a wireless charger (dependent on the version).

New C5 Aircross offers a wide range of latest-generation technologies to improve occupant comfort and safety, with a benchmark total of 19 driver-assistance systems, including Highway Driver Assist, which is a Level 2 autonomous driving system, combining Adaptive Cruise Control with a Stop & Go function, and the Active Lane Departure Warning system.

New C5 Aircross is the only SUV in its segment to offer three individually sliding, reclining and folding rear seats, allowing drivers to enjoy MPV-level modularity in an appealing SUV design. The boot volume is benchmark for the segment too: from 580-litres to 720-litre for petrol and Diesel versions, and from 460-litres to 600-litres for Plug-in Hybrid versions.

New Citroën C5 Aircross will be available at Citroën UK retailers during Q2 2022.

Just what the doctor ordered: Elvis Presley’s Cadillac heads to auction

A royal entry into the new year is guaranteed by Car & Classic’s online auction, where a majestic 1975 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham is guaranteed to instil fever in ‘The King’ Elvis Presley’s fans, who surely can’t help falling in love with the rock star’s car.

Still looking regal and magnificent, if unmolested, the 8200cc Cadillac was bought new in 1974 (1975 MY) by Presley himself from Madison Cadillac Inc, as all the paperwork – more extensive than any of the cars in the Elvis museum! – will reassure any suspicious minds. He specified the sunroof and bonnet-mounted ‘Goddess’ (still there after almost fifty years) and paid $12,512 for it.

The King is estimated to have bought more than 200 Cadillacs in his lifetime. He usually drove them for a while before donating them to family and friends. This particular Caddy was given to Elvis’s doctor in 1976.

Royal physician Dr G. Nichopoulos used the car for the following ten years, when the current owner bought it before selling it in 1990 and then buying it for a second time. The vendor in Sweden is now feeling it is time for them to go their separate ways.

Fittingly, the Cadillac is prominently photographed at many venues, a testament to its worldly, glamorous provenance; Car & Classic’s listing includes period images, a large ‘Graceland’ backdrop, as well as a framed 14k gold key for the car. The car requires recommissioning before being enjoyed but is said to be complete.

“You don’t purchase this car because it’s the ultimate example of American automotive greatness in the Seventies,” says Car & Classic editor Chris Pollitt. “You are buying a piece of original history, a period chariot belonging to one of the most famous showmen in the world. Shame it’s not pink.”

It is probably not a coincidence that The Cadillac’s auction start falls on 8th January, the day The King was born.

Rare Holden to be auctioned at Practical Classics Classic Car and Restoration Show

An extremely rare 1979 Holden Torana GTR XU1-Bathurst will be amongst the star lots of the Classic Car Auctions sale to be held at the Practical Classics Classic Car and Restoration Show in March 2022.

Believed to be possibly the only Holden Torana GTR XU1-Bathurst car in the Northern Hemisphere, the car is one of only 150 built in the period to achieve homologation for racing. Peter Brook took his first of 9 Bathurst wins in a similar 1972 car. The engine number for each of the 150 specials was recorded in the service manual by Holden, so that technicians would be able to service the vehicle in accordance with specific requirements for this model. All of the original books are present with the car, which is offered in the original “Strike Me Pink” livery.

The car is UK registered and has been owned by the vendor for 29 years. Last started in 1985, and in need of restoration, this is likely to be the only one of its kind offered for sale in Europe, or perhaps even the entire Northern Hemisphere. The car is offered with a guide price of between £45,000 – £55,000. The last example sold at auction, as a fully restored vehicle, topped £160,000 and significant interest is expected in this rare car.

The Holden will feature in an extensive catalogue that marks the return of Classic Car Auctions to the March show for the first time in three years. The leading auction house for Everyman classics, Classic Car Auctions is a division of the UK’s market leader for specialist and classic cars, Silverstone Auctions. Over the past two years Classic Car Auctions have sold over £15,000,000 of client vehicles and the Practical Classics Classic Car and Restoration Show will be the largest of the companies four sales scheduled for 2022. Consignments are currently open for the show, and Classic Car Auctions offers a free valuation service via the website. Bidding on the March event auction is available in person at the event or by phone, commission and online bidding for those unable to attend.

Hagerty reviews the most influential auction sales of 2021

Hagerty reviews the most influential auction sales of 2021

  • £310.8m of classic and collector cars sold at auction in 2021
  • £15.5m paid for 1995 McLaren F1 at Pebble Beach
  • Ex-Lewis Hamilton F1 car sells at British Grand Prix for £4.7m
  • 1998 Subaru Impreza STi 22b breaks records at £240,000
  • Wrecked Jaguar sells for almost £100,000
  • 1988 Escort Ghia with royal connections achieves over £52,000
  • Online bidder pays over £1m for a Ferrari F40

Last year, Hagerty tracked more than 12,500 UK and European auction results, over double those observed in 2020.

The numbers were huge: a total of £310.8 million in classic and collector vehicles sold, including 14 for over £1m, a significant increase from 10 last year.

Some of this increase was undoubtedly due to the expansion of Hagerty’s valuation operations, now called Automotive Intelligence, that tracks auctions, insured values and other data sources all around the world. But the increase is also a result of continued confidence in the market after the brief pause in early 2020. The specialist vehicle market seems to be moving onwards at a rate almost entirely unconnected to the pandemic.

Throughout this year of increased sales, it is inevitable that certain vehicles stand out. These are sometimes the most valuable, the rarest or those that indicate an emerging trend in the market, but others are notable just because they are really interesting cars. Here is Hagerty’s selection of 2021’s most influential global classic vehicle sales.

Most valuable: 1995 McLaren F1, £15.5m

Starting with the biggest sale of 2021 – the 1995 McLaren F1 sold by Gooding & Company at Pebble Beach in August. The final result was $20,465,000 (£15.5m) just shy of the Hagerty Price Guide condition 1 ‘concours’ value. Hagerty is aware of other, private sales that have been higher, but this was a world record price for the F1 at public auction.

Formula One royalty: 2010 McLaren MP4-25, £4.73m

The first of Lewis Hamilton’s F1 race and Grand Prix-winning cars ever offered to the public, it won the 2010 Turkish Grand Prix. This car is undoubtedly a piece of motoring heritage, as it was raced by Hamilton against the other dominant F1 legend of the modern era, Michael Schumacher. Sold by RM Sotheby’s at a special, single-lot auction at the British Grand Prix, it sold for £4.73m, just short of its top estimate.

Turning Japanese: 1998 Subaru Impreza STi 22B, $317,555 (£240,000)

As Hagerty has written about a great deal this year, Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) car values have been flying high in America. Some, like this 1998 Subaru STi 22B, don’t yet even qualify for the country’s 25-year import rule (only vehicles aged 25 or older may be imported to the US without having to meet the national vehicle regulations), but that doesn’t put buyers, off as seen back in April when it sold for a record-breaking $317,555 (£240,000) via Bring A Trailer.

The model hasn’t yet achieved the same level of value here in the UK: back in May, one of just 16 UK-spec 22Bs was sold by Silverstone Auctions for £171,000, more than expected but still a long way short of the Bring A Trailer record. Then, in November at the NEC sale, Silverstone tried again – this time with a 15,500-mile from new example that was estimated at an eye-watering £230,000 to £280,000. Bidding reached £200,000 and it did not sell.

Wrecked exotic: 1960 Jaguar XK150 S Drophead, £90,000

There are some auction results that are surprising, even to the seasoned observer who thinks they have seen everything. This car, offered by Bonhams MPH in May, was crashed by its previous owner in 1996. And it wasn’t just a small shunt: spinning off the road into a tree, the car took a huge impact to the front and sustained damage all along the right-hand side. The driver’s chest broke the steering wheel and his hair was still embedded in the windscreen! And yet, someone saw the potential for restoring this car back to its glory days and paid a very robust £90,000, just shy of our current £102,000 Price Guide value for an ‘Excellent’ example.

Group B stuns again: 1988 Audi Sport Quattro, €2.017M

An undoubted highlight of the Artcurial Paris sales of February 2021, exceeding its expectations by the largest amount and selling for €700,000 over its €1M to €1.3M pre-sale estimate. Hagerty has tracked the values of all Ur Quattros increasing significantly over the past 18 months. However, the value achieved – three times the top Hagerty Price Guide figure of £408,000 for the standard Sport Quattro – set a new level.

The Ugly Duckling: 1993 Jaguar XJ220, £460,000

An exceptional XJ220 with just 385 miles on the clock in factory Monza Red and a clean bill of health from marque specialists Don Law Racing, its sale may mark a watershed for the model.

A highlight of the Bonhams Goodwood Revival sale, it was the first time an XJ220 had exceeded our (then) top Hagerty Price Guide value of £445,000 and is a record for a public auction sale. It was quickly followed up by RM Sotheby’s sale of a similarly impressive example in their London sale in November which exceeded its pre-sale top estimate selling for £432,500. It’s notable that ten of the highest 11 values of the model at auction have been since 2019.

One royal owner: 1981 Ford Escort 1.6 Ghia, £52,640

Hagerty has tracked examples of the third-generation Ford Escort selling for more than £50,000 but they have been low-mileage examples of sporting models such as the RS Turbo and RS1600i. So, what made a slightly tired, 83,000-mile, 1.6 Ghia example, offered by Reeman Dansie, so sought-after? In May 1981 it was given as an engagement present by Prince Charles to the then-Lady Diana Spencer. This sale, in a specialist royal auction, fetched around ten times what Hagerty expects a very good example to reach without its amazing history.

Online landmark: Ferrari F40, £1,000,500

The Market’s July sale of ‘F40 BLU’, a 1989 Ferrari F40, for £1,000,500, was another watershed moment: the first time a car sold for over £1m in a dedicated UK online auction. Interestingly, it lacked the originality usually demanded of such top cars, having been painted in Porsche Aqua Blue, but made up for it in online presence, generated by its owner Sam Moores, the Car Chat podcaster and photographer. Interestingly, four bidders were still competing even after the car reached £980,000. Hagerty has tracked the values of F40s rising steadily over the last few years: from 2016 until 2021, top values in the Hagerty Price Guide rose by 11 per cent.

Two more exceptional examples sold in the US at Monterey in August, one for $2.89M (Gooding and Co) and another for $2.42m (RM Sotheby’s). With over 50 per cent of F40 owners who insure with Hagerty born since 1965 (up from 28 per cent in 2018), younger money is coming into the market, reinforcing the F40’s position as a key collectable car in the present climate.

Restorer’s dream: 1982 Lamborghini Countach LP500S, £257,600

It appeared to be a basket case, a supercar in component parts and in urgent need of saving. Yet this 1982 Lamborghini Countach LP 500S restoration case was sold by Historics in September for £257,600 – well over its top £180,000 estimate.

The LP500s (often called the 5000s) was the original Athena poster model. This one, stripped down and ready for a full restoration, was an ultra-rare right-hand drive example, one of just 37 made. Hagerty’s ‘Excellent’ value at the time was £334,000, not giving the new owner too much leeway for a full-cost restoration, but then again it’s rare for buyers in this part of the market, where money isn’t always a concern, to be presented with a blank canvas to restore to their own specification.
