7 Things to Check When Buying a Used Car

If you are looking to buy a used car, there are some things that you should look for in order to make sure it is worth your money.

In this blog post, we will discuss 7 items to check before buying a used car so that you can avoid any potential problems with the vehicle.

1. Check the engine for leaks

Check the engine for leaks in order to make sure there are no major issues present. Look under the hood and examine any seams with water around them that might be leaking from a hose or other component. If you notice anything, it is best not to purchase the car unless you plan on getting a full inspection done as soon as possible.

2. Check for the VIN number

Check for the VIN number in order to make sure that you are getting a car with an accurate title. In some states, it is illegal not to have this identification on the vehicle so if there isn’t one present, be wary of purchasing the car without doing more research.

3. Review all the records of maintenance and repairs

It is very important to review all the records of maintenance and repairs to make sure that there were done on a regular basis. If you notice anything out of the ordinary, it is best not to purchase the vehicle because this could lead to major issues with your car in the future.

4. Inspect tires, brakes, and headlights

Inspect the tires, brakes, and headlights. This will give you a good idea of how well the car was taken care of in terms of maintenance. If any one or more are not working properly it is best to steer completely away from this vehicle because they could be expensive fixes that have just been neglected by the previous owner.

If you notice that there is any damage to the wheels, it could be a sign of an accident. Although accidents can happen at any time and anywhere, this may be something you want to consider before purchasing the vehicle because if it was poorly taken care of after the accident, then your car will start developing problems too.

5. Test drive a car to see how it performs on different types of roads and surfaces.

Test drive a car to see how it performs on different types of roads and surfaces. This will give you an idea if the vehicle is perfect for your needs or not. If there are any parts that don’t work properly, such as headlights or wipers, then this information should also be taken into account before purchasing the vehicle.

The wheels can tell you if the car was in an accident.  Although accidents can happen at any time and anywhere, this may be something you want to consider before purchasing the vehicle because if it was poorly taken care of after the accident, then your car will start developing problems too. An adjustable trailer hitch is also a good idea to add on if the vehicle you’re wanting is used. It can help you tow things like trailers, boats, or other items that you need to transport.

If there are any parts that don’t work properly, such as headlights or wipers, then this information should also be taken into account before purchasing the vehicle.

6. Make sure you’re mechanically inclined enough to fix any issues that arise with your used car.

You should only buy a car if you have the time and resources to fix any mechanical issues that may arise. If not, then this means having money saved up for potential repairs when they come about. You’ll want to make sure your budget is able to cover higher repair costs because these cars are typically cheaper than new ones.

7. Ask for a warranty or take out an extended service agreement

Ask for a warranty or take out an extended service agreement if you can afford it – this will save you money in the long run by ensuring that your vehicle is repaired without costing you more than necessary.

Buying a used car can be complicated, but these 7 things will help you make an informed decision. If you’re not sure if your mechanic is trustworthy or qualified to inspect the vehicle before purchase, we recommend finding someone who is and having them do it for you. This way, when the time comes that something goes wrong with your car, they’ll know exactly what needs to be done without costing you more than necessary in repairs down the line. It’s also important to have any mechanical issues inspected by a professional before buying as well – this will save money on future maintenance costs and keep your new-to-your car running smoothly for years.

Vibrant Father’s Day turn-out for Beaulieu’s Hot Rod & Custom Show

Beaulieu’s long-awaited Hot Rod & Custom Show returned in style for 2021, with an impressive line-up of customised cars and bikes for Father’s Day, along with dancing, music and stands packed with vintage memorabilia, which all the family could enjoy.

4,000 visitors and participants came to enjoy the sell-out show in the grounds of the National Motor Museum on Sunday 20th June, held in association with the Solent Renegades club, with the opportunity to admire as many as 402 hot rods, custom and American cars and bikes, which took their places in the busy showground.

Awards were presented for some of the automotive stars of the show. Taking the Best in Show award was Nigel Green from Christchurch, for his astonishing 1931 Auburn special. Turning many heads with its hand-formed aluminium bodywork, Nigel had built his imposing machine with the help of a friend by turning an Auburn chassis upside down, then re-engineering it with a 1915 aero engine and chain-drive to the rear wheels.

The coveted Best Custom award was presented to Phil Webb, who had driven to the show from the Rhondda Valley in his stunning 1956 Ford F100 pick-up. The V8-powered truck’s smooth looks and remarkable build quality impressed the judges. While the Best Hot Rod award went to Steve Willsone from Essex for his 1954 Ford Popular. With a 351 Cleveland V8 engine powering its huge rear wheels, this pale blue ‘Pop’ was another big hit with show-goers.

Chosen from the multitude of amazing bikes and trikes on display, the Best Bike/Trike award was presented to Tony Philogene from Verwood for his home-made monster trike. Built by Tony all by himself using only basic tools, the heart of the trike is a modified Rover V8 engine, making it a very lively machine on the open road.

Nick Barnes from North London took home the Best American Car award for his immaculate 1972 Buick Riviera, another visitor favourite in the colourful line-up. The prize winners each received a trophy and a special Autoglym prize, presented by Beaulieu’s Head of Marketing & Business Development, Rachael Goldstraw.

Variety was at the heart of the Hot Rod & Custom show, as stripped-down hot rods and smooth customs parked side-by side. The line-up ranged from a V6-powered Ford Model T bucket roadster, a rat-look 1940s Chevrolet tow-truck and a period Ford stock car with a flathead V8 to immaculate 1920s and 1930s custom Fords, Corvettes and Trans Ams, ‘slammed’ pick-up trucks and more

The Solent Renegades club display was another highlight, while spread across the showground could be found all manner of Mercurys, Chevrolets, Plymouths, Dodges, Edsels, Pontiacs and others besides. Modified British classics on show included a pro-street Humber Super Snipe and Ford Anglia, and a 1934 Sunbeam Dawn hot rod.

Car customising legend and Hot Rod & Custom regular Andy Saunders brought along his crowd-pleasing 1937 Cord, Tetanus, and spent the day chatting with other enthusiasts.

There were plenty of opportunities to get your feet tapping, with Jitterbug Jive giving socially-distanced dance demonstrations that everyone could either take part in or enjoy watching. Performing rousing tunes throughout the day were Company B and The Bandits, while Mariachi el Mexicano delighted showgoers with their upbeat renditions as they strolled around the event.

In the Vintage Pop-Up, a selection of retro traders offered high-quality wares, from vintage fashions to homewares of the past, while motoring trade stands were the place to browse automotive accessories and tools.

Hot Rod and Custom is just one of Beaulieu’s exciting 2021 motoring events. Coming soon are Simply Land Rover on 11th July and Simply Ford on 18th July, with the Beaulieu Supercar Weekend set to take place on 7th & 8th August, while International Autojumble will be on 4th and 5th September.

Configuration now possible: launch of the new Polo with standard Digital Cockpit and Infotainment system

  • Digital and always on: Volkswagen launches the new Polo with Digital Cockpit and Infotainment system included in the basic version
  • Pre-sales under way: In Germany, the new Polo can be configured in all trim levels (Polo, Life, Style and R-Line) and as a special edition “Fresh”.
  • Features on demand: the navigation function and other online services can be activated later on in the Ready 2 Discover Infotainment system

The new Polo is launching with a Digital Cockpit as standard.

Volkswagen designed the architecture of the control centre so that all the information relevant for driving is available in a single line of vision. And the clarity of this layout is hard to beat. The digital instruments and the Infotainment system merge into a single unit with intuitive operation. With its standard systematic integration of information, communication and entertainment, the Polo sets a new benchmark in it class.

Volkswagen has developed a technical and visual update for the Polo. Pre-sales are starting now with extended standard features. One of the features that are always on board is the Digital Cockpit – digital instruments with a display diameter of 20.32 cm. The Digital Cockpit is operated by means of the now also standard multifunction steering wheel.

Also included in the basic price: the Composition Infotainment system with a 15.5-cm touchscreen (for the Polo and Life trim levels). As an alternative to the buttons on the unit itself, the driver can also control many functions via the multifunction steering wheel – including access to the integrated Bluetooth mobile phone interface, digital radio reception (DAB+) and volume control. The standard features also include various online services and functions of We Connect (unlimited activation) and We Connect Plus (activated for one year). A wide range of information can also be accessed by smartphone from outside the Polo – such as the status of the central locking system, the driving data or the current parking position. If the parked Polo has been left unlocked accidentally, even this can be changed via smartphone. With the Polo Life trim level, App-Connect is also always on board. Here, native smartphone apps – including telephone, music, news, calendar and voice control (Siri / Google Assistant) functions – can be integrated into the Infotainment system.

Those who opt for the Polo in the Style trim level automatically activate the next level of digitalisation. In this case, the functions are enhanced with the Digital Cockpit Pro, which features a 26.04-cm display (optional for Life and R-Line trim levels). Using a View button on the multifunction steering wheel, the driver can choose between three graphical options and configure the content with a great degree of freedom. For example, a large map view can be shown on the display in vehicles with navigation function. The media library with cover flow function can be projected between the rev counter and speedometer.

In the case of the Polo Style and Polo R-Line, the Ready 2 Discover Infotainment system also comes as standard. The spectrum of We Connect Plus can be extended to include Streaming & Internet, Internet Radio and a Wi-Fi hotspot. For the first time, App-Connect can be integrated in Ready 2 Discover not just by USB-C, but also as App- Connect Wireless. Passengers on board have a clear view of everything thanks to the large 20.32-cm touchscreen with proximity sensors. But Ready 2 Discover offers much more: the navigation function can also be activated subsequently as a feature on demand via the system’s In-Car Shop. This then also makes additional online services and functions available: among other things, the Polo driver has access to Online Traffic Information, Online Route Calculation and Online Destination Import from their smartphone.

The two navigation systems Discover Media (display diagonal 20.32 cm) and Discover Pro (screen diagonal of 23.5 cm) are also available as optional extras. The systems feature enhanced music performance and a host of extended menu functions. A camera integrated into the windscreen is also connected to the systems’ Dynamic Road Sign Display function. The current road signs are communicated to the display and digital instruments as real-time information. Additionally, Discover Pro is equipped with intuitive voice control that can be used to operate the radio, telephone and navigation functions.

If the new Polo is ordered with the optional two-zone automatic air conditioner (Climatronic), this system also features digital control for the first time. The temperatures and fan are adjusted by means of touch sliders, and all other air conditioning functions and the heated seats by means of digital touch controls. Thanks to the innovative range of onboard technologies, the new Polo offers significant added value compared with its predecessor. In a nutshell: never before has a Polo been so digital, connected, informative and communicative.

A matter of lateral: the torque splitter in the new Audi RS 3

  • Active rear-axle torque vectoring for maximum driving dynamics
  • Unmatched acceleration and top speed in the segment
  • Two new RS 3-specific driving modes for circuits and controlled drifts

The new Audi RS 3 represents the epitome of unadulterated driving dynamics.

This is Audi’s first vehicle to feature the RS Torque Splitter, which distributes drive torque between the rear wheels in a fully variable manner. In combination with the 400 PS five-cylinder engine, the compact sports car is supremely agile. The 2.5 TFSI now unleashes 500 Nm of torque, 20 Nm more than in the previous model. The Audi RS 3 sprints from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 290 km/h (180 mph) – record numbers in the segment.

How does the RS Torque Splitter work?
The RS Torque Splitter makes active, fully variable torque vectoring between the rear wheels possible. Unlike the rear axle differential and the previous multiple disc clutch package on the rear axle, the torque splitter uses one electronically controlled multiple disc clutch each on the respective drive shaft. During dynamic driving, the torque splitter increases the drive torque to the outer rear wheel with the higher wheel load, which significantly reduces the tendency to understeer. In left-hand curves, it transmits the torque to the right rear wheel, in right-hand curves to the left rear wheel, and when driving straight ahead to both wheels. This results in optimal stability and maximum agility – especially when cornering at high speeds. When driving on closed roads, the torque splitter enables controlled drifts by applying all of the engine power to just one of the rear wheels – up to a maximum of 1,750 newton meters of torque. The exact distribution of drive torque always depends on the mode selected in Audi drive select and the respective driving situation.

Each of the two multiple disc clutches has its own control unit, which use the electronic stabilization control’s wheel speed sensors to measure the wheel speeds. Other influencing factors include longitudinal and lateral acceleration, the steering angle, the position of the gas pedal, the selected gear, and the yaw angle, i.e. the rotational movement around the vertical axis. In addition, the torque splitter is connected to the modular vehicle dynamics controller as a higher-level entity.

Why does the torque splitter improve driving performance?
Due to the difference in propulsive forces, the car turns into the curve even better and follows the steering angle more precisely. This results in less understeer, earlier and faster acceleration when exiting corners, and particularly precise and agile handling – for added safety in everyday use and faster lap times on the racetrack. The torque splitter also compensates for oversteer by directing the torque to the wheel on the inside of the curve or, if necessary, to both wheels.

Speaking of acceleration – what’s new about the engine and transmission?
The five-cylinder in the Audi RS 3 is more powerful and delivers higher torque. Instead of 480 newton meters, a maximum of 500 newton meters is now available – across a wide rev range from 2,250 to 5,600 rpm. A new engine control unit also increases the speed and intensity at which all of the drive components communicate with each other. As a result, the RS 3 responds even faster, especially in the low rev ranges. The maximum power of 294 kW (400 PS) is now available in the range from 5,600 to 7,000 rpm and thus earlier and longer than in the previous model. As a result, the compact sports car sprints from zero to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds, 0.3 seconds faster than before. The Sedan and Sportback reach their top speed at 250 km/h, although 280 km/h is also available as an option. In fact, with the RS Dynamic package and ceramic brakes, they can even reach a top speed of 290 km/h. This makes the RS 3 the best in its class in terms of acceleration and top speed. A 7-speed dual-clutch transmission puts the power of the five-cylinder engine to the pavement – with a right-angle drive with a more robust design that takes account of the increased torque and the sportier gear ratio spread. The intelligent interaction of all the drive components, including Launch Control, enables the RS 3 to shift gears extremely quickly, resulting in lightning-fast starts and heart-pounding acceleration.

What role does the modular vehicle dynamics controller play?
Following its use in the A3 and S3, the modular vehicle dynamics controller (mVDC) now also ensures that the chassis systems interact more precisely and more quickly in the RS 3. To do so, this central system captures data from all the components relevant to lateral dynamics. The mVDC synchronizes the torque splitter’s two control unitsthe adaptive dampers, and the wheel-selective torque control for high-precision steering and handling. All in all, it increases the agility of the entire vehicle, especially on dynamic stretches of road.

What effect does Audi drive select have on driving performance?
The driving dynamics system Audi drive select in the new RS 3 offers seven modes: comfort, auto, dynamic, efficiency, as well as RS Individual, RS Performance und RS Torque Rear. Depending on the selected mode, the characteristics of important powertrain and chassis components change from an emphasis on comfort to highly dynamic to even optimized for the racetrack. In addition to the torque splitter, Audi drive select also has an effect on the engine and transmission characteristics, steering assistance, adaptive dampers, and exhaust flaps. Different characteristic curves for each of the aforementioned systems create a broad range of driving experiences.

In RS Individual mode, each system can be configured separately within its predefined characteristic curves. In Dynamic mode, all of the components are configured for a sporty ride. The driver feels this in a more direct steering response and particularly agile handling for dynamic driving with a clearly perceptible engine sound. The gearshifts of the S tronic are shorter, acceleration even sportier. The ultimate in driving dynamics can be experienced in Dynamic mode and in the new RS 3‑specific RS Torque Rear mode.

How is the torque splitter integrated into the driving dynamics system?
Audi drive select modifies the characteristics of the torque splitter and thus the car’s handling depending on the selected mode. Five characteristic curves – Comfort/Efficiency, Auto, Dynamic, RS Performance, and RS Torque Rear – are saved in the system. In this context, engine power is distributed to all four wheels in the Comfort/Efficiency modes, with priority given to the front axle. In Auto mode, torque distribution is balanced, which means that the RS 3 neither understeers nor oversteers. Dynamic mode, on the other hand, tends to transmit as much drive torque as possible to the rear axle – for maximum agility and increased dynamics. This is taken to perfection in RS Torque Rear mode, which allows drivers to perform controlled drifts on closed roads. The highly rear-heavy distribution of the engine power leads to oversteering behaviour, with up to 100 percent of the drive torque directed to the rear ending up at the wheel on the outside of the curve. In addition, Audi has adjusted the engine and transmission characteristics. This specific setup is also used by RS Performance Mode, which is designed for the racetrack. It is specially tuned to the Pirelli P Zero “Trofeo R” performance semi-slick tires, which are optionally available factory-mounted for the first time. In this mode, the torque splitter delivers a particularly dynamic, sporty ride along the longitudinal axis with as little understeer and oversteer as possible. This results in fast acceleration out of corners and thus better lap times.

Electronic stabilization control – activated, Sport, or switched off?
The electronic stabilization control (ESC) in the RS 3 has been specifically tailored to the torque splitter, suspension, tires, and the new RS driving modes. It operates even faster and more precisely than in the previous model. The ESC can be set to a Sport mode, and the RS Performance driving mode is set to ESC Sport at the factory. For particularly sporty driving – on closed routes, for example – the ESC can also be switched off completely by holding down the button in the center console for longer than three seconds.

Greater precision, greater stability – how are the shock absorbers configured?
The standard RS sports suspension features newly developed shock absorbers and a valve system both specific to the RS 3. The valves ensure that the shock absorbers exhibit a particularly sensitive response as part of the rebound and compression characteristics. This allows the suspension to respond to the respective driving situation even faster and more effectively.

The RS sport suspension plus with adaptive damper control is available as an option. It continuously and individually adjusts each shock absorber to the road conditions, the driving situation, and the mode selected in Audi drive select. The three characteristic curves comfortable, balanced, and sporty provide a clearly perceptible spread of the shock absorber characteristics. The ideal damping force is calculated within milliseconds – low for hard bumps, high to support the vehicle body during rapid cornering or braking. To do this, sensors measure the vertical acceleration of the body and the movement of the individual wheels relative to it. This results in increased dynamics and excellent driving stability with even greater comfort compared to the RS sports suspension. In RS Individual mode, the shock absorbers can be configured according to individual requirements and the road conditions within the three characteristic curves. In RS Performance Mode, there is a specific comfort setting for the shock absorbers that minimizes vertical excitation and provides optimum support for smooth lateral dynamics – particularly suitable for racetracks with uneven surfaces, such as the world-famous Nordschleife.

What other components contribute to increased driving dynamics?
The setup of the springs and shock absorbers is markedly stiff, and the body is ten millimeters lower than on the Audi S3 and 25 millimeters lower than on the A3. This lowers the vehicle’s center of gravity further towards the road. Installed up front is a McPherson strut suspension with RS 3-specific pivot bearings, stiffened lower wishbones, subframes, and stabilizers. To increase cornering force, i.e. to provide more grip in corners and more dynamic cornering, the Audi RS 3 has just under one degree of additional negative camber compared to the A3. This increased tilt towards the road surface, i.e. the greater angle between the wheel plane and the vertical, also results in a more precise steering response. The rear axle features a four-link design with separate spring/shock absorber arrangement, subframe, and tubular stabilizer bar adapted to the torque splitter. Reinforced wheel carriers increase lateral dynamics as well as response to steering inputs and as such, vehicle agility.

The RS-specific progressive steering varies the gear ratio depending on the steering angle – as the steering angle increases, the gear ratio becomes smaller and steering more direct. It also assists based on speed and can be varied via Audi drive select within the three characteristic curves comfortable, balanced, and sporty. In this way, the torque splitter and the rest of the vehicle’s innovative components perfectly put the new Audi RS 3’s dynamic power to the pavement in every driving situation.

So as families across the UK plan their Father’s Day celebrations, what better way for the UK’s brightest, best and most interactive car show to mark the occasion than by announcing a special ‘Mum and Dad’s Cars’ display among its vast array of classic and modern motors.

From Austin Maestros to Vauxhall Cavaliers, we all remember the cars that ferried us to school and back, took us on our first dates or allowed us our first taste of motoring freedom on the day we passed our tests, and as a celebration of all things automotive The British Motor Show wants to commemorate that as much as it wishes to bring the latest and greatest the car industry has to offer in touching distance of the fun-loving public.

“This is the only car show where you’ll find a Nissan Bluebird rubbing shoulders with a brand new McLaren,” said The British Motor Show CEO, Andy Entwistle. “But it’s the cars our mums and dads owned that were the catalyst for most of us developing a love of cars, and The British Motor Show is all about the love of cars.

“Our Mum and Dad’s Cars display will bring a taste of nostalgic automotive ordinariness to an already packed show, where the love of Ferraris and Lamborghinis is just as important as the love of Ford Sierras and Rover 200s, which for many of us is where it all began.”

With the UK government reconfirming ‘Freedom Day’ as July 17th, the British Motor Show – sponsored by Cinch – is all systems go to become the first major motor show of 2021 to go ahead with no Covid-19 restrictions.

And that’s just another reason why the action-packed return of a British Motor Show on the international stage is major news for the automotive industry, as well as promising an fun-filled day out at a truly affordable price for the British public, who are desperate to enjoy summer holiday fun.

It’ll be packed with interactive car-themed experiences, from the latest electric models to some tantalising classics, with a level of live, interactive experiences and celebrity guests never before seen at a previous British Motor Show.

Set to take place at Farnborough International from August 19-22, no other Motor Show has ever delivered such a variety of content, celebrity guests and live action. Tickets are an absolute bargain at an incredible £18.50 a head, with a family ticket including two children costing just £37 making it one of the best value and enjoyable days out for the forthcoming summer holidays.

The Puma ST Gold Edition will be powered by a 200PS 1.5-litre EcoBoost petrol engine for 0-62mph acceleration in 6.7 seconds.
